DEFINITION

Under general supervision, to provide immediate emergency medical care for the sick and injured at emergency scenes and during transportation to a hospital; to perform the duties of firefighter; and to perform related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this class perform emergency medical treatment, communicate by radio with physicians while at the scene of an emergency and attend victims of emergency while enroute to a hospital or until other medical personnel assume the responsibility for care of victims. Positions in this class have considerable independence in selecting proper procedures from a variety of standard methods or procedures. Instructions given by a physician generally do not provide all of the information needed. Incumbents are expected to resolve emergency medical problems confronted through the application of judgment and protocols.

 Qualifications:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position. A typical qualifying entrance background is experience performing a full range of fire suppression work supplemented by skilled experience performing varied paramedic work.

CERTIFICATION & LICENSES

Must possess current California or National Registry Paramedic license and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification at time of application and have worked as a full-time Paramedic for a minimum of one year. Must obtain San Diego County accreditation prior to the end of the fire recruit academy. Paramedic license and ACLS certification is required to be maintained as a condition of continued City employment. In addition, candidates must possess a completed California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I certificate, or equivalent. A valid California Class “C” Driver’s License must be obtained prior to employment. A California Class “B” (or California restriction 80 fire apparatus only) Driver’s License must be obtained by the end of 18 months and maintained as a condition of continued City employment.

 Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Laws, ordinances and codes affecting the work of Firefighter/Paramedics;

  • Fire fighting principles and methods;

  • Basic English grammar, spelling, punctuation and composition;

  • Basic mathematic and mechanical relationships;

  • Medical supplies, pharmaceuticals and common prescription drugs;

  • Diagnostic signs and treatments for injuries and illness as described in the County of San Diego Paramedic Protocols;

  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

    ABILITY TO:

  • Perform emergency first aid, including CPR;

  • Respond quickly to changing situations under emergency pressures;

  • Climb ladders and work at considerable heights;

  • Use the tools and equipment of fighting fires;

  • Perform limited mechanical work involved in maintaining fire fighting and rescue vehicles, equipment and tools;

  • Pass periodic recertification tests;

  • Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices;

  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;

  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

    Strength: Very Heavy Regular and continuous lifting, carrying and/or pushing 100 pounds or more. Willingness to comply with rules and regulations governing wearing attire. Incumbent is required to work outside in the elements. Work may require climbing to heights, stooping and crawling in confined spaces.
