Library Technician III provides paraprofessional library services in large or  community libraries and serves as lead person for technicians, pages, and volunteers; may supervise the operation of a small community library or the circulation department of a larger library; and performs related work as required.

This position will be required to work evenings, weekends, and/or irregular hours.

The current vacancies are regular, full-time openings at Camarillo Library and at E.P. Foster Library in Ventura. The eligible list generated from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies for regular positions, full and part time, as well as intermittent, or extra help positions, throughout the Ventura County Library system.

EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Possible educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree.

AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: Library Agency

Library Technician III's are represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and are eligible for overtime compensation. The eligible list established for this position may be used to fill existing and future regular, temporary, fixed-term, intermittent and extra-help positions throughout the County.

There are currently two (2) vacancies in the Library Services Agency.

 Examples Of Duties:

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Has responsibility for the operations of a small community library or of the circulation department of a larger library. 
  • Answers questions concerning Library resources.
  • Assists patrons with internet access and other electronic resources.
  • Supervises Homework Center Coordinators.
  • Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates subordinate staff.
  • Utilizes computer terminals to charge and discharge library materials.
  • Collects fines and makes deposits as necessary.
  • Prepares and presents programs on library usage to various groups.
  • Selects books, periodicals, and audio-visual materials for children and adult collections.
  • Serves as a liaison with local community groups and schools.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  •  Typical Qualifications:

    EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

    The successful candidate will possess a combination of education, training, and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree AND (2) two years full time library experience OR (6) six years of increasingly responsible clerical experience, (3) three of which involve public contact in a library services or educational environment.

    SUBSTITUTION:  Graduate level college courses (at least (3) three courses) in Library Sciences or a closely related field may substitute for (1) one year of library experience.

Failure to complete and submit the questionnaire will result in the application being removed from consideration.

    APPLICATION EVALUATION – qualifying:
    All applications will be reviewed to determine whether or not the stated requirements are met. Those individuals meeting the stated requirements will be invited to the written examination.

    WRITTEN EXAMINATION - 100%:
    A job related written examination will be administered to test candidates’ knowledge of those factors which are essential for successful performance on the job. Candidates must earn a score of seventy (70%) percent or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list. Candidates successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.
