4. Medical Examination. The stringent medical standards to become a Deputy Sheriff Trainee have been developed over many years. Some of the most common reasons individuals are unable to pass are listed below. These are minimum/maximum standards and are significantly different from the ideal or average.

a. Hearing Loss. Safety officers must have no greater than 25-decibel loss in the better ear as averaged between the frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hz. There may not be a greater than 35 decibel loss in the worst ear as averaged over the frequencies 500, 1000, 2000, 3000 Hz. There may not be in either ear a peak of greater than: 30 decibels at 500 Hz, 30 decibels at 1000 Hz, 40 decibels at 2000 Hz, or 40 decibels at 3000 Hz.

b. Color Blindness. Applicant must pass a Farnsworth 15 test and/or Ishihara test.

c. Poor Vision. (Poor vision in either eye) - Corrective procedure must have been declared before physical examination, and should be accompanied by documentation, that their correction has remained stable greater than 6 months for Lasik, and greater than one year for Radial Keratotomy and Orthokeratotomy. Open Angle and Closed Angle glaucoma are automatic disqualifiers.

Individuals must have uncorrected visual acuity of at least 20/70 in each eye, correctable to 20/30 in each eye. Applicants that can validate they have worn soft contact lenses for more than 12 months without complications are not required to meet the uncorrected vision standards.

Liver Function - Use of bodybuilding diet supplements, including, but not limited to, "Creatine" (in any form), will often affect liver function tests. Therefore, it is important that you do not take bodybuilding diet supplements within several weeks of the blood test. Abnormal test results will require investigation at the applicants' expense before approval can be granted.

d. Weight and Body Fat. Applicants who exceed the maximum weight allowed for sex and height will fail unless their body fat is within the standard, < 20% for males and < 30% for females.

UNSATISFACTORY RESULTS IN ANY ASPECT OF THE FOREGOING, INCLUDING BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION FINDINGS, MAY RESULT IN REMOVAL FROM THE ELIGIBLE LIST.
