Under general direction, compounds & dispenses pharmaceutical preparations and supplies for patients of the Ventura County Medical Center/Mental Health and other County Departments, and performs related work as required. Completes tasks related to the evaluation of patient drug therapy. APPROXIMATE SALARY: Pharmacist II: $35.53 - $52.27 Pharmacist - PDP IV: $ 55.51 Regular employees in this classification may be eligible to receive Market Based Premium Pay depending on the current market wages. EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Possible educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree if not required for position for regular positions only. BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Possible Bilingual incentive depending on the applicable MOA and the needs of the department for regular positions only. AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: Health Care Agency/Ventura County Medical Center Pharmacist II and Pharmacist - PDP IV are represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and are eligible for overtime compensation. NOTE: This class is within a bargaining unit that is subject to an “agency shop” arrangement, which mandates all regular employees either join Local 721 of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and pay dues as a member, or pay either a “service fee” to Local 721 or direct that an amount equivalent to the “service fee” be distributed to a qualified charitable organization. The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future regular, temporary, fixed-term, intermittent and extra-help vacancies for this position within Health Care Agency . Examples Of Duties:
|
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: - Reviews prescriber medication orders for completeness and appropriate-ness (with respect to disease state, dosage, route of administration, drug compatibilities, contraindications, etc.) to assure optimal patient care; and to consult with the prescriber directly when necessary.
- Compounds, prepares, and dispenses medications, solutions, and supplies, or supervises technicians in the performance of such duties.
- Makes routine checks of nursing stations for proper storage of medication and supplies; and for outdated medications and supplies.
- Dispenses and controls narcotics, hypnotics, and all other controlled substances.
- Maintains up-to-date patient medication profiles on all inpatients.
- Documents and records all clinically significant drug reactions; reports all serious or unusual reactions to the drug manufacturer, and to the FDA.
- Participates in various activities evaluating patient drug therapy such as drug utilization review and audits as directed by the Pharmacy Director.
- Participates in pharmacy sponsored nursing and medical in-service.
- When requested writes drug therapy orders following facility approved protocol.
- Interviews and counsels patients regarding the correct use of medications.
- Provides consultation to other healthcare providers regarding clinical use of drugs.
- Precepts pharmacy students.
- Participates in department quality assurance activities.

Typical Qualifications:

These are typical requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list. EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE Pharmaceutical degree (Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy) from an accredited school of pharmacy or its equivalent. Plus a minimum of a combination of four (4) months of recent hospital/clinical/ outpatient/inpatient and retail pharmacy experience. The required pharmacy experience must be experience obtained after obtaining the Pharmacist license in the state of California. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S) Must possess and maintain a current valid license as a Pharmacist in the state of California.
