The City of Vancouver Parks and Recreation Department is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Recreation Leader for the City’s Kids First After School Program. The Kids First After School program is offered at 3 elementary schools: Fruit Valley, Washington and Image for grades K-5. This program is a free service targeting low-income families. The focus of the program is on recreational activities including cooperative games, sports, fitness and wellness. Arts and crafts, music, drama and homework help are also provided. Kids First works with children of all abilities and strives to make all kids successful in program.

Kids First begins in October and ends in May. The schedule is as follows:

Fruit Valley & Washington, 10/5-5/28, M/W/F, 2:50-5:30pm (staff work 2:40-5:40pm) Image, 10/6-5/29, T/F, 3:35-5:05pm (staff work from 3:20-5:20pm)

Leaders receive 1 extra hour each program day for planning

Mandatory training is held the last week of September 2009.

All qualified candidates must provide a high level of customer service at all times; project and maintain a positive image with those contacted in the course of work and act as a team player within the area of assignment and in all interactions with other city departments.

Recreation Leader is a temporary, seasonal position.

 Functions:
 

The candidate for this position must be able to:

§         Create a structured daily schedule that minimizes disruptive behavior

§         Plan activities that keep children engaged at all age levels

§         Lead program operations (set up, clean up, snack time, etc)

§         Implement program policies and procedures along with completing forms

§         Supervise and manage a team of staff

§         Effectively delegate appropriate job duties to program staff

§         Lead activities such as games, crafts or sports

§         Implement behavior management techniques when needed

§         Follow and implement safety procedures (injuries, emergencies, stranger danger)

§         Provide accommodations when needed for children with disabilities

§         Establish/maintain positive relations with community members including parents/school officials

§         Work with a variety of kids from varying backgrounds and abilities

§         Work outdoors (playgrounds, sports fields) even during inclement weather

§          Attend mandatory staff meetings and trainings

  •     Successfully pass a criminal background check;
  •    Successfully pass employment references;

     All City employees are expected to perform their duties in accordance with the City’s Operating Principles; work and act as a team player in interactions with other city employees; and provide a high level of customer service at all times.

    Meet the basic qualifications expected of all job applicants:

    • A stable and verifiable work, volunteer or educational history;
    • A record of regular and dependable attendance;
    • Reliable transportation;
    • A professional, well-groomed appearance;
    • Strong communication, problem-solving and teamwork skills.
  •  Qualifications:
     

    The candidate for this position shall have the following qualifications:

    §         Equivalent to a High School Diploma with college course work in Recreation, Leisure Studies, Child Development, Education, Physical Education or related field

    §         At least one year of work experience in a supervisory position

    §         At least one year of work experience with elementary-aged youth in a group setting

    §         First Aid/CPR certification

    §         Crisis Prevention Institute’s Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training (provided upon hiring)

    Bi-lingual abilities to serve our diverse customer base is a plus.  English/Spanish skills preferred.

    Ability To:

    §         Communicate clearly and effectively

    §         Listen and take directions from supervisors and co-workers

    §         Lead effectively

    §         Offer help when needed

    §         Take initiative in all program aspects

    §         Engage kids in the program and work on ways to enhance their experience

    §         Be energetic when leading or assisting with activities

    §         Maintain a positive attitude at all times (smile big and often!)

    §         Keep the safety and well-being of all participants as the top priority

    §         Respond to emergency situations quickly and effectively

    §         Comply with policies and procedures assigned by Parks and Recreation Department, City of Vancouver

    §         Successfully pass a criminal background check;

    §         Successfully pass employment references

    Meet the basic qualifications expected of all job applicants:

    §         A professional, well-groomed appearance;
