The City of Vancouver Parks and Recreation Department is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Senior Recreation Helper for the City’s Kids First After School Program. The Kids First After School program is offered at 3 elementary schools: Fruit Valley, Washington and Image for grades K-5. This program is a free service targeting low-income families. The focus of the program is on recreational activities including cooperative games, sports, fitness and wellness. Arts and crafts, music, drama and homework are also provided. Kids First works with children of all abilities and strives to make all kids successful in program.

Kids First begins in October ends in May. The schedule is as follows:

Fruit Valley & Washington, 10/5-5/28, M/W/F, 2:50-5:30pm (staff work 2:40-5:40pm) Image, 10/6-5/28, T/F, 3:35-5:05pm (staff work from 3:20-5:20pm)

Mandatory training is held the last week of September 2009.

All qualified candidates must provide a high level of customer service at all times; project and maintain a positive image with those contacted in the course of work and act as a team player within the area of assignment and in all interactions with other city departments.

Senior Recreation Helper is a temporary, seasonal position.

 Functions:
The candidate for this position must be able to:

§ supervise and manage groups of kids (from 10-20 kids)

§ lead activities such as games, crafts or sports

§ implement behavior management when needed

§ assist with program planning when needed

§ assist with program operations (set up, clean up, snack time, etc)

§ follow and implement safety procedures (injuries, emergencies, stranger danger)

§ provide accommodations when needed for children with disabilities

§ work positively and effectively with other program staff

§ establish and maintain positive relations with other community members including parents and school officials

§ work with a variety of kids from varying backgrounds and abilities

§ work outdoors (playgrounds, sports fields) even during inclement weather

§ attend mandatory staff meetings and trainings

All City employees are expected to perform their duties in accordance with the City’s Operating Principles; work and act as a team player in interactions with other city employees; and provide a high level of customer service at all times.

 Qualifications:
 The candidate for this position shall have the following qualifications:

§  Have at least one of work experience with elementary-aged youth in a group setting or one semester of child-development course

§  First Aid/CPR certification

Bi-lingual abilities to serve our diverse customer base is a plus.  English/Spanish skills preferred.

Ability To:

§ Communicate clearly and effectively

§ Listen and take directions from supervisors and co-workers

§Offer help when needed

§ Take initiative in all program aspects

§ Engage kids in the program and work on ways to enhance their experience

§ Be energetic when leading or assisting with activities

§ Maintain a positive attitude at all times (smile big and often!)

Keep the safety and well-being of all participants as the top priority
Respond to emergency situations quickly and effectively

Comply with policies and procedures assigned by Parks and Recreation
Successfully pass a criminal background check;
Successfully pass employment references;
