The City of Vancouver, Washington is currently seeking a Group Exercise Instructor for the City of Vancouver’s Marshall Community Center. The individual selected will lead exercise and activity sessions in one or more assigned exercise formats, set up and monitor class equipment, and ensure its return in serviceable condition and provide a high level of customer service at all times.

Hours may vary from 1 – 20 hours a week (maximum 1040 total hours in a rolling 12 month period); schedules may vary weekly, depending on need.

 Functions:

The candidate in this position must be able to:

  • Plan and lead exercise/activity sessions in one or more assigned exercise formats;
  • set up and monitor class equipment, and ensure its return in serviceable condition;
  • Communicate and work well with all program participants, other city staff, and any individuals contacted in the course of work;
  • Respond to basic public inquiries regarding program information;
  • Advise participants on program and class procedures and policies, as appropriate;
  • Utilize proper safety precautions in all aspects of job;
  • Develop positive public relations;
  • Promote the program/area of assignment though various means, attend staff meetings and required trainings;
  • Assist in providing a safe program and environment for participants and staff;
  • Distribute handouts and communicate with participants as needed;
  • Work a flexible schedule which may include, evenings and weekends;
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as necessary.

 Qualifications:

The candidate for this position shall have:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, valid CPR, First Aid, and AED cards within one month of hire;
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a National group exercise certification (ACE, AFFA, Nedita or other) within six months of hire;
  • Previous work or volunteer experience or training with a fitness background and/or group exercise studio conducting group exercise classes;
  • Previous experience working with people with special needs is desirable;

The ability to:

  • Work a flexible schedule including, evenings and weekends;
  • Respond quickly and effectively in an emergency situation;
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with the public, program participant and other city employees;
  • Interact well with a diverse group of program participants;
  • Read, write and follow instructions;
  • Monitor compliance policies and procedures;
  • Maintain certification through continuing education classes and workshops;
  • Successfully pass a criminal background check;
  • Successfully pass employment references;
