| This position is safety sensitive and subject to Valley Metro RPTA's Drug & Alcohol Program. Applicants for positions defined as safety sensitive are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and, subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty, and follow up testing.
The Traction and Electrification Supervisor position is responsible for planning, supervising, directing, reviewing and evaluating the work of staff in the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of light rail traction power substations, and facilities power distribution components, equipment and facilities including proper care, control and preventive maintenance. Typical duties: Oversee maintenance and repair of overhead power substations, traction and electrification, inspections, preparation of cost estimates, recordkeeping, and safety. |

| Minimum Qualifications & Requirements: | |
| Equivalent to Associates degree in Electrical Repair and Installations or related field AND Four (4) years of experience as a Class A Master Electrician, performing maintenance of high voltage systems including substations OR Three (3) years of directly related experience in electrical construction.
OR Equivalent of Six (6) years of experience in electrical/electronic maintenance, including Three (3) years in an electrified rail or high voltage power supervisory position AND the equivalent of completion of a recognized apprenticeship program for electricians. A combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities will be considered. Medical Examination: Employment for safety-sensitive positions is contingent on passing a physical examination performed by our examining physician. Drug Examination: Applicants for positions defined as safety sensitive are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and, subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty, and follow up testing. Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon the results of a background check. Incumbent is required to obtain within 90 days of hire, and maintain a current valid Arizona Commercial Driver’s License (CDL Class B) with Air Brakes endorsement. Position requires the ability to maintain insurability under METRO’s Vehicle Insurance Policy. |

| Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills: | |
| Plans, schedules, and supervises, the inspection, maintenance and repair of overhead contact wires, poles, support cables, insulators, switch gears and rail bonds;
Supervises and performs inspections and repairs of traction power voltage, monitor systems, charging systems, circuit breakers and other electrical substation systems; Supervise a staff of a 24 hrs/7 day operation; responds to emergency calls 24 hours a day, 7 days per week; Plans, schedules and supervises the inspection, maintenance and repair of overhead power substation; Plans, organizes, assigns, supervises reviews and evaluates the work of staff, writes performance evaluations, trains staff in work procedures, and administers discipline as required; Responsible for selected major component repair and overhaul of LRT substations, equipment and systems; Participates in budget preparation; prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations and monitors and controls expenditures; Performs complex repair and troubleshooting; safely using and maintaining hand and power tools and test equipment related to the work; Inspects and certifies completed work to verify conformance to specifications and regulations; Supervisor operates hi-rail vehicles in the maintenance and repair of equipment and facilities; Ensure that LRT rail vehicles are moved in a careful and professional manner with all yard rules obeyed; Assists in developing and implementing goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards for work unit. Prepares, issues, prioritizes and tracks facility equipment and equipment maintenance and repair work orders; maintains accurate records of work performed; utilizing MMIS software; Ensures that an immediate corrective feedback loop is maintained when subsequent failures of a repair or overhaul occur. Ensures staff is trained in and follows special safety precautions of high voltage electrified rail corridors; Uses standard office equipment, including a computer, in the course of the work; drives a motor vehicle to conduct work site inspections; Maintains maintenance records and prepares reports on unit work activities; Ensure that the special safety precautions of high voltage electrified rail corridors are strictly adhered to; Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work; This class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive. Knowledge of: In-depth understanding of rail operations and safety practices Methods and procedures used to repair and maintain high voltage electrical systems; Principles of supervision, training, motivation and counseling; Theory and principles of electrical and electronic equipment and circuits; Principles and practices of electrical construction and insulation; Laws, ordinances and regulations governing electrical installation, maintenance safety and accident prevention; Ability to develop and conduct instruction programs; Written and verbal communication and presentation skills; Problem analysis and resolution skills; Skill in: Handling multiple tasks simultaneously; Monitoring and evaluating contractors’ work; Operation and maintenance of hand, power and shop tools and test equipment used in the trade. Read and interpret construction plans, specification and electronic, electrical and electromechanical schematics, and diagrams; Interpreting and applying local, state, and federal policies, procedures, laws, and regulations; Supervise, train and discipline staff; Developing and implement procedures for preventative maintenance programs; Developing and implementing procedures, costs estimates, budgets, records and reports; Using computer and related software applications; Prepare written reports, documents defects and repairs on section forms, work orders, or designated computer programs; Establish and maintain cooperative, working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. |
