Under general supervision, performs a variety of law enforcement duties in the care, custody, and security of all prisoners in the Union County Jail. Is primarily responsible for the prevention and detection of crime and the general enforcement of criminal laws of North Carolina. Performs general jail and detention work. Employee is responsible for maintaining the safety and security of all personnel, inmates and jail. Employee must exercise initiative and independent judgment in completing assigned tasks. Employee must also exercise tact, courtesy and firmness in frequent contact with the public. The employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work. Reports to the shift Sergeant.
Essential Job Functions:
Maintains the safety and security of all personnel, inmates, and jail.
Works booking area. Books inmates in and out. Searches inmates. Secures personal property.
Prepares files for incoming inmates. Activates inmates’ files as needed. Photographs new inmates.
Completes medical, money, and property forms for all inmates.
Prepares release orders from court. Maintains court records.
Answers phone calls.
Keys inmate information into Sheriff's Office/Jail computer.
Provides inmates with clothing.
Observes inmates.
Applies and removes restraints.
Makes daily cell assignment sheet.
Makes list of prisoners confined.
Furnishes information for bail bondsmen, families, attorneys, court officials, and other law enforcement personnel.
Takes inmates to and from Magistrate.
Makes copies of information as needed.
Books “weekenders” and “public assists”.
Maintains sweeping and cleaning of phone cell, drunk tanks, booking area halls, and master control.
Feeds all inmates 3 times daily. Removes or supervises the removal of trays from blocks 3 times daily.
Dispenses medication.
Takes inmates to Nurses office as directed.
Supervises trustees.
Prepares cleaning supplies.
Attends meetings.
Places supplies in blocks. Removes supplies from blocks.
Runs visitation 2 times a week.
Changes out clothing and linens 2 times a week.
Receives and dispenses money and mail for inmates.
Operate pod controls while supervising 2-48 man blocks.
Searches cells.
Transports mental patients as directed and ordered.
Transports inmates to and from court.
Transports inmates to other jails, Department of Corrections, or mental hospitals.
Transports juveniles to regional detention centers.
Stops fights between inmates and attacks against officers.
Supervises pastors in the cell blocks.

Minimum Qualifications:
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's Degree, and 5 to 11 months of experience in law enforcement in a jail; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of Basic Detention Officer Certification from the N.C. Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission. If the certification is not held at the time of employment, it must be obtained within 1 year.
Possess a valid North Carolina Drivers License.

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, printer, pagers, telephones, radios, cameras, copiers, calculators, firearms, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle.
