Job Title: Extra Help Firefighter
Salary: $7.50 Hourly

Location: Future Vacancies in Multiple Locations in Tulare County, California
 

 
 
Accepting applications for extra help. As extra help positions become available, the County Fire Department selects the most qualified and appropriate applicant for the position available. The number of hours and duration of employment varies by each assignment. Extra help Firefighters may be assigned to work in a variety of locations throughout the geographic county area. Extra help employees may not work more than 1,559 hours in any fiscal year, from July to June. An extra help employee who mistakenly works in excess of 1,559 hours in a fiscal year does not become a probationary or regular employee.

 Typical Duties:
Respond to alarms and assist in the suppression of fires, and perform rescue and removal of persons from harm; connect and lay hose lines; operate nozzle and direct water stream onto fires; operate chemical fire extinguishers; operate and climb ladders; perform forcible entry when necessary; ventilate buildings; clean up and perform salvage operations after fires; assist in maintaining and caring for fire apparatus, equipment, fire station and grounds; respond to emergency calls, operate resuscitator, and administer first aid; attend scheduled drills and training; may train to drive and operate fire engine and equipment; may drive under supervision.

 Employment Standards:
Education/Experience – Any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. (Completion of Basic Firefighter training, supplemented with college fire science courses; possession of a State of California certified volunteer firefighter or higher level certification, Public Safety First Aid or higher level certification, and/or Professional Rescuer CPR certification highly desirable).

Knowledge of- Modern fire prevention and suppression methods; First Aid and CPR techniques.

Skill/Ability to – Operate equipment and assist in the suppression of fires, medical emergencies, and in the protection of life and property; learn technical fire fighting techniques and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression; operate and maintain fire fighting, rescue and emergency medical equipment, tools, and supplies; understand and follow written and verbal directions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, management, and the public; maintain accurate records; communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

 Additional Information:
Additional Requirements- Candidates may be required to reside within a reasonable response distance to the area being served by the local fire station. The County Fire Chief will determine that distance.

Candidates must successfully complete an initial 80 hours of paid fire training prior to response. Satisfactory completion of County provided training required for continued employment. Must also pass an alcohol/drug screen and a physical exam.

License or Certificate- Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid California driver’s license, a valid CPR certificate and a valid First Aid Certificate.
