High school diploma or equivalent. LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Upon hire you must maintain a Valid Washington State Driver’s License, First Aid and CPR card with maintenance thereafter. |

| Knowledge & Skills: | ||||||||||||||||
Principles, practices and procedures used in police work. State, County and City laws and ordinances. Recent legislation and court decisions affecting police duties. Traffic and crowd control techniques. Rules of evidence and laws of arrest. Operation of a variety of specialized police vehicles and equipment. Crime scene preservation and investigation methods and techniques. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Basic First Aid procedures. Operation of a personal computer. Prepare clear and concise reports. Maintain proficiency in driving and in the use of firearms in accordance with department guidelines. Analyze situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Understand scope of authority. Relate effectively to people of a variety of cultures, languages, abilities and social-economic situations. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Observe legal and defensive driving practices. Comply with safety standards and regulations. |

| Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be sent via e-mail a Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) during the month of February, 2010. Following instructions and meeting set deadlines is the applicant's responsibility. Please be sure to check your e-mail reguarly. Failure to follow the requested processes may result in disqualification. Please indicate your email notification preference in your online application to receive more efficient communications from the City of Tacoma Human Resources and Police departments. Once we have received both your application and personal history questionnaire you will be invited to participate in the civil service testing process at a date in March 2010. Applicants must pass a written exam as well as a physical fitness ability test (PFAT). Applicants must pass all phases both before and after the eligibility list is established, including driving record, credit history, conviction/arrest record, work history, reference check, and oral board interview. Applicants may be removed from the eligible list for failure to pass the pre-employment interview, background investigation or any other screening element. Once an offer of employment is made, all applicants must undergo a medical examination, polygraph examination, and psychological evaluation to determine if they meet City of Tacoma standards in effect at the time of examination. The medical examination will include a drug screening. Once you are a commissioned officer your position is covered by a Labor Agreement between the City of Tacoma and Local 6 Tacoma Police Union IUPA. An employee in this position will be required to join the union within 30 days of their commission.
