DEFINITION:
Under the direction of a Parking Enforcement Supervisor, enforce codes and ordinances governing parking, providing work direction and technical solutions, and assisting the public by providing information concerning parking regulations, locations and directions.
 
Distinguishing Characteristics
Positions in this classification are distinguished by assignment and performance of lead elements including providing work direction to others. Within established guidelines, independently organizes, prioritizes, and initiates work activities for parking enforcement officers.

 Essential Duties:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Function as a lead, providing work direction to others.
  • Assist Parking Supervisor with assignments of routes and equipment.
  • Pick up, transport and input vehicle accident records.
  • Respond to telephone and email questions and complaints from internal staff and public regarding parking operations issues.
  • Operate parking related computer equipment – upload, download, enter, edit and review related data and generate reports.
  • Perform uploads of software updates.
  • Point of contact for the other officers to solve parking related equipment technical and software issues.
  • Perform troubleshooting operations on the new Pay Stations and other parking related technologies.
  • Monitor flow of vehicles in timed parking areas; issue citations for parking violations such as overtime parking, illegal parking in truck, bus and fire hydrant zones, double-parking, parking on the wrong side of the street and related violations; and monitor and issue citations for improperly licensed vehicles.
  • Monitor and enforce the responsibility of construction sites to provide and maintain safe walk areas for pedestrians; report and monitor dangerous road and sidewalk conditions; monitor safety of children, pets and parked cars; monitor traffic signals and signs; and report any discrepancies.
  • Operate a two-way radio to check registrations; report stolen vehicles; request assistance in emergency situations and relay information regarding working situations.
  • Answer a variety of questions from the public regarding directions and information concerning ordinances and laws; respond to questions regarding parking regulations, location of parks, public buildings and other points of interest and geographical locations.
  • Assist Road Use Compliance Officers by identifying and tagging abandoned autos.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

City of Tacoma ordinances and revised Code of Washington relating to parking, barricades, conception and direction.

 Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS (TRAINING AND EDUCATION):
High school graduate or equivalent required plus two years of experience handling citizen complaints and working independently, including one year as a parking enforcement officer.
 
 
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER LEGAL REQUIREMENTS:
Obtain Special Police Commission within six months of employment. Possession of a valid Washington Drivers’ License at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.
Obtain both a First Aid Card and a flagging card within 9 months of employment.
 
There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position. 
  • Depending upon assignment a WA driver’s license may be required.
  • Individuals may have to pass a background check depending upon assignment
