Routine law enforcement and criminal investigation work.

 Distinguishing Features of Work:
Employees in this class perform routine criminal investigation, law enforcement and process serving tasks. Employees receive general supervision on routine tasks and special instructions on new or difficult cases.

 Work Environment:
These work environment factors are general in nature and may vary depending on the specific position being filled. CONSTANT: Vision; hearing; balance; feel/use fingers; grasp/handle; and taste/smell. FREQUENT: Rotate trunk; sit; stand; stoop/bend; talk/speak; walk; work around others; customer/public contact; clients with behavioral challenges; shift work; extended days; work inside, outside and driving. OCCASIONAL: Lift and carry up to 70 pounds; push/pull up to 120 pounds; climb stairs; crouch/squat; and reach.

 Selection Process:
A copy of POST licensure or POST eligibility letter must be attached to your application. You may attach the document by scanning your resume and POST license/eligibility together into one file and uploading it under "resume attachment". Applicants may apply and take the exam prior to completion of the skills training course and licensing exam, but they cannot be considered for appointment until these requirements have been completed.

Minimum Qualifications (pass/fail)

Successful completion of a certified two-year or four-year, post-secondary law enforcement training program as required by the Minnesota Peace Officers Standards and Training Board, and passing of the academic, and skills if necessary, licensing examination required by M.S. 626.845; OR, possession of a valid Minnesota Peace Officers License.
U.S. citizenship.
Must be at least 19 years of age.
Must have or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license.
Must have not been convicted of a felony.
Must be free from any emotional or mental condition which might adversely affect the performance by the individual of his/her duties as a Deputy Sheriff.
Must be in good physical condition and have sufficient strength and endurance to perform the duties proficiently.

Experience & Training Rating 40%

Points will be awarded for job-related experience and education exceeding the minimum qualifications. Only experience occurring during the ten most recent years will be used in determining this rating. Experience beyond ten years may be included on the application for purposes of meeting minimum qualifications or informing the hiring authority of your complete employment history.

Written Exam 60%

The next exam will be administered on September 22, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. in the Mini-auditorium (Room 195) at Fond du Lac Community College in Cloquet and in Room C158 of the Mesabi Community College in Virginia, MN. To participate in this exam, applications must be received by September 9th. Eligible candidates submitting an application after the September deadline will be invited to participate in a future examination. To participate in this exam, you must bring picture identification, your Person ID, and a #2 pencil.

Background Investigation (pass/fail)

Candidates certified for interview shall be required to successfully complete:
1. Background investigation form/questionnaire and background/reference checks.
2. Psychological testing.

DRUG TESTING:
Applicants selected for appointment must take and pass a drug test.

EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY VERIFICATION :

All new employees must submit documentation verifying identity and employment eligibility within three days of their first day of employment.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:
Appointees to the position must successfully complete at least a six month probationary period prior to being certified for permanent employment.
