Effective June 1, 2009 St. Louis County has implemented a new Correction Officer test, Correction Officer Video Test (COVT). The test includes variety of scenarios with multiple-choice answers including reading, writing and counting assessment.
The testing will take at least 3 hours.
Testing dates are yet to be determined. Applicants will be notified by US Mail or E-mail as soon as a dates are available.

Corrections Officers are responsible for maintaining the safety, custody, security and control of inmates at all levels of security in an indirect or direct supervision, prisoner processing or work release environment.
Positions are assigned to the Justice Center located in Clayton and are full time. This is a 24/7 operation, employees may work day,
evening or night shifts.  Visit Justice Services website for detailed information relating to the management of the St. Louis County Justice Center.
The Starting Salary is $14.05 per hour. After successful completion of a six-month probationary period, the salary will go to $14.40 per hour or $29,952 per year.

 Examples of Duties:
  • Maintain order and discipline within the housing units.
  • Supervising, escorting, and transporting inmates.
  • Coordinates and monitors daily activities of inmates.
  • Patrolling and inspecting housing units and inmates cells.
  • Conducts scheduled and random searches of inmates and assigned areas to maintain a safe and secure environment.
  • Maintains an appropriate record of daily activities, disciplinary action, inmate movements and services provided and enters information into a computerized system.
  • Enforces rules and regulations to ensure adherence to policy and defined procedures.
  • Assist fellow officers.
  • Working to achieve the highest level of correlation to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the facility.
  • Performs such additional duties, with the required abilities and under the indicated working conditions and environment, as may properly be required of a position in this job class

 Minimum Qualifications:
High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
Completion of 30 credit hours in behavioral sciences, criminology, corrections, or a related area and two years of responsible work experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Possession of a valid driver's license.
Must be able to pass a criminal history background check which will be conducted prior to hire.

 Additional Information:
  The selection procedure will include but not limited to the following:
  1. Satisfactory completing an employment application.
  2. Selection for COVT testing based on minimum qualifications from the employment application.
  3. Pass COVT test based on passing score determined by the Division of Personnel.
  4. Applicants passing the COVT will be placed on the eligible list.  The Division of Personnel will certify the top candidates from the eligible list to the Department of Justice Services for further consideration.  Your name will remain on the eligible list for up to two years.
     All applicants conditionally offered a position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be borne by the County.
