This class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive. Incumbent(s) may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skills. - Conduct epidemiologic surveillance activities including community assessments.
- Design data collection forms and enter data into computer.
- Interview cases, contacts, and suspected disease carriers.
- Conduct epidemiologic analyses of disease data from various sources using computer software.
- Assist in the investigation and control of disease outbreaks.
- Participate in field investigations at hospitals, physician offices, laboratories, clinics, food establishments, childcare facilities or other locations as necessary to complete epidemiologic investigations.
- Prepare reports on investigative activities and findings using computer software.
- Evaluate and investigate unusual disease reports from laboratories, physicians and others.
- Provide information and answer questions from health district staff, health care providers, the media and the general public regarding disease symptoms, and disease prevention and control.
- Make presentations to the medical community and general public.
- Special projects as requested by managerial or administrative staff.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications:
|
Knowledge of: - Basic principles of biology and microbiology.
- Epidemiologic principles.
- Communicable disease etiology and intervention methods.
- Risk factors associated with communicable, vector-borne and chronic diseases.
- Chronic disease prevention methods.
- Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
- Principles and procedures of record keeping.
- English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Ability to: - Use a computer proficiently.
- Work effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
- Calculate basic statistical measures such as rates, averages, medians, standard deviation, confidence intervals and to plot data on graphs.
- Design and conduct case-control and cohort studies and community assessments.
- Interview cases in order to determine demographic, medically relevant information and risk factor data.
- Interpret and analyze the significance of medical, health and other data obtained from a variety of sources.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain congenial relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Maintain a professional demeanor in all circumstances.
- Learn pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations pertaining to disease surveillance and control.
- Learn county health safety policies and procedures.
- Learn to recognize health safety violations.
Training and Experience Guidelines Training: - Equivalent to a Masters degree in epidemiology or a Masters degree in Public Health with major course work in epidemiology from an accredited college or university. (Equivalent means that Master’s degree course work is completed, and/or a year long certificated and Master degree equivalent program has been completed.)
Experience: - One year of experience, post degree, working in epidemiologic research or public health disease investigation.
Working Conditions: - Office and investigation site environment.
- Exposure to individuals with various communicable diseases.
- Required to use computers for extended periods of time.
License or Certificate: - Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Nevada driver’s license as a condition of employment.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

Distinguishing characteristics have been changed for this position as of 9/21/09. This recruitment is for an infectious disease epidemiologist. Candidates who submitted an application prior to 9/21/09 may edit/revise their application. This position is responsible for infectious disease epidemiology. Candidates must have a minimum of one year experience specifically in infectious disease epidemiology to move forward in this recruitment. PREFERENCES: Above the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will possess: A PhD in epidemiology or MD/MPH or MD/PhD in epidemiology with a minimum of 2 years applied epidemiology experience and/or 2 years experience in infectious disease epidemiology OR A minimimum of 4 years of clinical experience in infectious disease epidemiology (e.g,. Nurse Epidemiologist). Experience working for a state/local public health agency is highly desired. All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications of this position will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. |
