Job Title: INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT-SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER
Salary: $19.46 - $24.84 Hourly

Under immediate supervision, reinforces lesson plans and interprets instructional and other information conveyed in an educational setting individually and/or in groups by using manual and oral methods of communication for deaf and hearing impaired students.

 EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
1. Interprets for deaf and hearing impaired students in variety of instructional settings, such as classroom lectures and activities, group discussions, assemblies, field trips and counseling sessions by using sign language and/or oral interpreting skills and/or other appropriate manual and oral methods of communication.
2. Assists in carrying out lesson plans and provides follow up on instructional presentations.
3. Observes and reports student progress or problems to certificated personnel and confers with students, parents, faculty, and administrators in areas related to student learning and behavior.
4. Assists with supervision of classroom, outdoor, playground and field trip activities to direct students into appropriate activities and relationships.
5. Secures and operates multi-media equipment and assists students in operating auditory equipment, TDD, and hearing aids, hearing aid batteries, etc.
6. Assists students in becoming self-reliant.
7. Interprets in parent-teacher conferences.
8. Interprets and assists in parent and/or staff training programs (teaching sign language).
9. Performs related duties as assigned.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Graduation from high school or equivalent evidence of proficiency at the high school level.
Successful completion of at least 18 units of an accredited ASL course, such as child development. Documentation is required.

Experience:
One year paid experience in sign language interpreting or verifiable volunteer experience working in a school or other structured environment, such as recreation, camp, or day-care working with children and/or young people, using ASL, PSE and/or SEE.
Any combination of education, training and/or experience which demonstrates the applicant is likely to possess the required skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:
American Sign Language (ASL), Pidgin Sign English (PSE) and Sign Exact English (SEE).
Interpreting strategies and techniques necessary to accommodate individual needs of deaf and hearing impaired students.
Various academic subjects, such as English Language, Mathematics, History, Science, and Social Science.
Deaf culture and the nature and problems of deafness. Basic concepts of child development and behavior.
The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Interpreters Code and Ethics.
Basic record keeping and filing procedures.

Ability to:
Convey information, intent, and spirit of a speaker to the deaf and/or hearing impaired students.
Demonstrate sensitivity to the communication process between deaf and hearing impaired students and non-impaired individuals and the needs of the persons involved in that process.
Assess and adjust to students’ language abilities and their preferred communication mode, such as ASL, SEE.
Work cooperatively with deaf and hearing impaired as well other disabled and non-disabled students in a multicultural, multiethnic educational environment.
Convey information promoting the awareness of the unique needs and issues pertinent to the deaf and hearing impaired student.
Establish and maintain on-going, positive relationships with students, parents, staff and the public.
Comply with District and school policies and procedures and rules and regulations.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Interpret sensitive materials, such as sex education in a professional manner.
Motivate students to participate in learning activities.
Be flexible.

LICENSES & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Licenses and Other Requirements:
Effective July 1, 2009, and thereafter, an Instructional Assistant-Sign Language Interpreter shall be certified by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), or equivalent; in lieu of RID certification or equivalent, an interpreter must have achieved a score of 4.0 or above on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), the Educational Sign Skills Evaluation Interpreting/ Receptive (ESSE-I/R), or National Association of the Deaf /The American Consortium of Certified Interpreters (NAD/ACCI) assessment.
