Public Health Nurse II is the journey level class in the Public Health Nurse series. Under general supervision, a Public Health Nurse II performs the full range of public health nursing duties in homes, public health centers, and other community settings. Public Health Nurses work in the following programs: Tuberculosis (TB) Control, Immunizations, Foster Care, Child Health and Disability, Border Health, Bioterrorism, Epidemiology, and others. Duties include: providing public health nursing services to individuals and/or families; conducting home visits in urban and rural communities; examining patients to identify health problems; assessing and identifying individual and community health needs; providing case management to high-risk populations; instructing families in health promotion and management of health and health-related problems.

You must have the following education and experience to qualify:

1. Valid California Registered Nurse License required at time of application; AND,
2. A valid Public Health Nurse Certificate from a State Public Health Nursing or other regulatory agency required at time of appointment (see note below); AND,
3. A bachelor of science degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or certified equivalency for foreign studies in nursing; AND, one (1) year of full-time experience as a Registered Nurse under the direct supervision of an official public health agency with a generalized public health nursing program; OR, one (1) year of full-time experience as a Registered Nurse working with at least one of the following groups: pregnant women, infants and toddlers, parents, adults and children with tuberculosis, community groups regarding maternal and child health issues and communicable disease; OR,
4. A master's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in a nursing, public health, or related specialty; OR,
5. One (1) year of full-time experience as a Public Health Nurse I for the County of San Diego.

Notes:
1. Applicants must be at least in the process of obtaining their Public Health Nurse Certificate at the time of interview.
2. A copy of your final transcripts or diploma or foreign equivalency report MUST be submitted immediately. If you are already in a County of San Diego position that requires a bachelor’s degree in nursing, you do not need to re-submit this documentation.
3. A valid CPR card required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
4. Some positions require that incumbents acknowledge that they are aware of child abuse reporting requirements and agree to comply with them in accordance with California Penal Code Section 1166.5.

Public Health Nurse Certification
Obtaining a Public Health Nurse Certification is a simple and relatively quick process which involves completing one (1) on-line child abuse course and the necessary application.
