The County of San Diego is currently accepting applications from persons with proven law enforcement experience.  

Lateral Deputy Sheriff’s are assigned one of three bureaus: Detentions, Court Services or Law Enforcement Services. Assignments are based on the needs of the department and on the applicant’s training and experience.  Deputy Sheriffs perform a variety of general law enforcement functions consisting of patrol, court services, investigations, arrest, apprehension, supervision of inmates; and other duties as assigned.

APPLICANTS MUST MEET AT LEAST ONE OF THE FOLLOWING
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION:

1. Successful completion of a California P.O.S.T. Basic Law Enforcement Academy within the past three (3) years and possession of a valid Certificate of Completion.
OR
2. Successful completion, at any time, of a California P.O.S.T. Basic Law Enforcement Academy, with less than a three (3) year break in service in one of the following Penal Code categories:
830.1 Sheriff's, Marshals, City Police, San Diego Unified Port District Harbor Police, etc.; 832.2(a) California Highway Patrol; 830.2(d) Member of University of California Police Department; 830.2(e) Member of California State University and College Police Department
830.3l(g) Member of San Francisco BART Police; 830.3l(h)Harbor or Port Police.
OR
3. Successful completion of a California P.O.S.T. Re-Certification Course, and possess a valid California P.O.S.T. Certificate.
OR
4. Successfully completion of a California Basic P.O.S.T. Waiver Exam, with documentation from P.O.S.T.
OR
5. Successfully completion of an four-part reserve format training modules A, B, C, & D, for the regular Basic Course.
OR
6. Current enrollment and within three months of graduation from a California P.O.S.T. Basic Law Enforcement Academy. At the time of the Qualifications Shoot Examination, the applicant must present a letter from the Academy, on letter head, confirming enrollment, graduation date and the applicant’s good standing in the class.

IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE, APPLICANTS MUST MEET ALL OF THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION:
(a) Must be at least 20.5 years of age at the time of the Qualifications Shoot Examination/Exercise described below; at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
(b) Must possess a U.S. high school diploma or GED certificate.
(c) Must have no felony convictions and must not be on probation; misdemeanors may be disqualifying depending on number, type and recency.
(d) Must be a United States citizen or resident alien in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen.

APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS AT THE TIME OF THE SELECTION INTERVIEW AND BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION PROCESSES:
(a) Successful completion of the background investigation and selection interview processes; for additional information, refer to the Evaluation Section below.
(b) Vision: 20/100 uncorrected; correctable to at least 20/30; or soft contact lenses correctable to 20/30 (subject to California P.O.S.T. requirements).
(c) Possession of a valid California class C driver's license prior to appointment.

APPLICATION PROCESS:
Prior to taking the Qualifications Shoot examination or exercise, applicants must complete the following three (3) steps:

STEP 1: Complete the on-line application form and provide correct and complete responses to the Supplemental Questions.
AND
STEP 2: Print a hard copy of your application and bring this copy to the Qualifications Shoot exercise.
AND
STEP 3: Make a reservation for the Qualifications Shoot Exercise by sending an email to Recruit@sdsheriff.org, or calling (858) 974-2000 or (858) 974-2159, and leaving a voice message for a Sheriff's recruiter.

NOTE: BE SURE TO COMPLETE STEPS 1, 2, AND 3 BEFORE APPEARING FOR THE QUALIFICATIONS SHOOT EXAMINATION.

YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE ANY KIND OF NOTIFICATION TO TAKE THE QUALIFICATION SHOOT EXAMINATION. THEREFORE, YOU MUST BE SURE TO CONTACT THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT UNDER STEP 3 LISTED ABOVE.  

NOTE: IF YOU DO NOT MEET THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR DEPUTY SHERIFF LATERAL, AS DETERMINED BY THE APPLICATION SCREENING, THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES WILL NOTIFY YOU VIA E-MAIL OR LETTER.  IF YOU RECEIVE THIS EMAIL OR LETTER, YOU WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE TO TAKE THE QUALIFICATION SHOOT EXAMINATION. 

The evaluation process of this recruitment will consist of a Qualifications Shoot examination or exercise. Applicants must successfully pass this exercise in order to be placed on the eligibility list for Deputy Sheriff - Lateral for one year. 

The next available date for the Qualification Shoot is Thursday, January 28, 2010.  November 2009 and December 2009 qualification shoot sessions have reached capacity.  The qualification shoot exams are held at 7:00 a.m. at the Miramar Training Facility located in San Diego, California. SUMMARY OF THE OVERALL EVALUATION PROCESS:
1. COMPLETION OF ON LINE APPLICATION AND SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONS (Steps 1, 2, and 3 indicated above).
2. QUALIFICATION SHOOT EXAMINATION AND PRE-SCREENING ORIENTATION – Refer to the description below to obtain more information on the Qualification Shoot Exercise. Candidates who successfully pass the Qualifications Shoot Examination will attend a Pre-Screening Orientation.  Candidates may be invited to participate in the background investigation and selection interview processes listed below.
3. COMPREHENSIVE BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION which takes a minimum of four to six months to complete.  The Background Investigation process will include a Physical Abilities Examination.   The Sheriff's Department will communicate the date, time, location, and description of the Physical Abilities exam to the candidate during the background investigation process.
4. COMPUTER VOICE STRESS ANALYSIS EXAM AND EMPLOYMENT INTERVIEW.
5. SELECTION INTERVIEW conducted by Sheriff's sworn management.
6. PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION conducted by a County appointed Psychologist.
7. MEDICAL EXAM conducted by a County Physician.

SPECIFIC NOTES ON QUALIFICATIONS SHOOT EXAM (LATERAL FIREARMS TESTING):

You should bring your own duty/personal handgun for this part of the testing process. You must meet all listed requirements when using your personal handgun. If you do not own a duty/personal handgun, you can still participate in this exam using a department provided Glock Model 22 .40 S&W caliber semi-automatic pistol.

Requirements for testing with personally owned ‘duty’ handguns:

1. The duty handgun will be in 9MM, 40 S&W, 45, 38 special or 357 calibers. You must have at least three magazines (or two speed re-loaders) for the handgun.

2. The duty handgun will be in good working condition with all factory safeties functional. Handguns determined to be in poor condition or unsafe will not be allowed for the test. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO SHARE YOUR HANDGUN WITH OTHER APPLICANTS. If you do not have your own handgun or your handgun is disallowed you will TEST WITH THE DEPARTMENT GLOCK MODEL 22 .40 S&W CALIBER SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL.

3. You supply your own ‘uniform’ duty leather gear for this test. This includes duty belt, holster, and magazine pouch (or speed re-loader pouch) as well as belt keepers. NO CROSS DRAW OR SHOULDER HOLSTERS PERMITTED.

4. You will provide your own ammunition; ammunition must be factory manufactured, no RELOADS permitted.

When you arrive at the Sheriff’s Administration Center, your weapon should be stored in your trunk, unloaded and in its holster.

RANGE INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Arrive at the range with your duty leather on and your UNLOADED handgun holstered. Remain holstered at all times when not testing.

2. An inspection of your personally supplied ammunition and handgun will occur prior to the test.
