|
Under general supervision, provides nursing care and administers prescribed medications and treatments to patients; performs related tasks as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This class is assigned treatment tasks requiring specialized training to assist physicians and nursing staff, and to administer medications. |

Examples of Duties:
|
- Conducts basic physical and mental status assessments; assists patients in filling out various forms; records health history and assesses medical status; establishes and documents a health care plan under the supervision of a physician, Nurse Practitioner, or Registered Nurse; carries out diagnostic procedures under physician orders; provides instruction and education to patients for various health problems and prevention, medical tests and procedures.
- Performs various routine medical procedures such as giving injections, ear lavage, cleaning wounds and changing dressings; schedules medical tests and surgeries; administers medications; draws blood and collects specimens such as urine, sputum, stool, and throat cultures; conducts various routine tests such as TB skin test, urinalysis and blood glucose; performs diagnostic tests such as EKG’s, pulmonary function, treadmill, and audiometry; arranges for emergency medical care and removal of patient from the facility if necessary.
- Assures sufficient supplies and medication are available at all times; makes routine inspections of medical equipment; maintains daily logs, medical records and statistical data; in some cases may act as a lead worker in the coordination of clinics.

Employment Standards:
|
Possession of a valid license as a Vocational Nurse in the State of California.
Knowledge of: physical and mental health assessment techniques; first aid procedures; cardiopulmonary resuscitation; the effects and side effects of commonly used medications; general practice medicine and medical terminology; standard diagnostic and medical equipment and instruments.
Ability to: conduct health assessments; accurately document medical records; perform diagnostic procedures; arrange for medical referrals, tests and surgeries; perform standard medical procedures and diagnostic assessments; educate and instruct patients regarding various health problems and prevention, medical tests, and procedures; establish good communication with patients, nursing staff, and physicians. |
