COUNTY OF SANTA BARBARA HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT 1226 Anacapa Street Santa Barbara, Ca. 93101 Exam No.: 08-1408-01 (Ong.) Candidates may be appointed at the I or II level, depending on the candidate’s qualifications and the needs of the department. The salary for the Occupational Therapist are as follows: I level: $29.70 - $36.26/hr. for part-time; or $5,166 - $6,306/mo. for full-time. II level: $31.85 - $38.88/hr. for part-time; or $5,539 - $6,762/mo. for full-time. Broadway, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Positions: This recruitment is open all year long and positions may be filled as they occur any time during the year. There may or may not be a vacancy at the time you apply. Applications are being accepted for Santa Barbara, Lompoc, and Santa Maria. California Children Services (CCS) is a program of the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department. The CCS program is part of the State Department of Health Services, Children’s Medical Service Branch and the Public Health Department administers the program at the County level. The Medical Therapy Program within CCS is dedicated to the medical care of children (0-21 years of age) who are at risk for or who have serious, chronic, and disabling physical conditions or diseases. The program is center based with medical therapy units located on public school sites. Occupational Therapists work closely with local agencies and encourage consultation within the home and school setting. The program provides services to approximately 500 children at three therapy units and three therapy satellite offices throughout the county. The Medical Therapy Program employs occupational therapists, physical therapists, physical therapy assistants and aides, and office assistants. The County offers excellent benefits, including an excellent continuing education program. The Medical Therapy Program is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Examples of Duties:
|
1. Evaluates functional capabilities of infants, children, and adolescents with physical disabilities using appropriate assessment tools; establishes occupational therapy treatment goals and plans of service; submits written goals and plans of service to CCS paneled physician for approval and prescription for treatment; selects occupational therapy treatment techniques; constructs and/or recommends the purchase of adaptive equipment or splints; and administers occupational therapy to patients. 2. Assists with Medical Therapy Unit specialty clinic planning and organization and presents patients, case histories, and treatment updates to clinic physicians. 3. Prepares written evaluation reports, medical chart notes documenting services provided and patient response, and Patient Treatment Records for statistical and medical billing purposes. 4. Instructs patients, parents, caregivers and educational providers on proper handling techniques and use of medical equipment to reinforce therapy treatment goals. 5. Directs the therapy services provided by paraprofessional staff. 6. Makes presentations to orient community agencies and groups to CCS Medical Therapy Services. |

Employment Standards:
|
Possession of a valid license as an Occupational Therapist issued by the California Board of Occupational Therapy and certification as an Occupational Therapist by the National Board of Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). Applicants may be hired without the certification(s) provided they meet the minimum qualifications required to obtain an Occupational Therapy Limited Permit issued by the California Board of Occupational Therapy and acquire their Certificate of Registration as an Occupational Therapist with the National Board for Certification within four months of their hire date. Additional Qualifications: Independent travel will be required. Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License is required. Knowledge of: concepts, scope, principles, and practices of physical or occupational therapy services; normal and abnormal growth and development of children; human anatomy and physiology, including all systems of the body with emphasis on musculoskeletal and nervous systems; pathophysiological conditions resulting from injury and disease; psychosocial reactions to illness and disease; special medical problems of high-risk infants; standard physical or occupational therapy assessment tools and tests; self-care and daily living skills needed by patients for maximum independent living; standard physical or occupational therapy documentation format and requirements; durable medical equipment, adaptive aids, and orthopedic devices used in pediatric rehabilitation treatment; professional ethics and conduct; and medical-legal aspects of occupational therapy services. Ability to: evaluate the functional capabilities of children with a variety of disabling conditions; interpret assessment results; develop treatment plans; construct splints or adaptive equipment; teach the use of orthopedic devices and adaptive equipment; explain treatment techniques, equipment, and programs to persons with varying degrees of technical understanding; establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, their families, care givers, and other medical and educational staff; work as part of interdisciplinary team; act effectively in medical emergencies; collect and analyze data, draw conclusions, and make recommendations; keep accurate records; and use clear and concise language in written and oral communications. |

SELECTION PROCESS: 1. Review applications to determine those candidates who meet the employment standards. All applicants who meet the employment standards will receive a score of 70 percent, and their names will be placed on the employment list. The department will receive all names on the employment list. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their names placed on the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the employment list is established, all candidates will receive written notice of their score on the exam(s), rank on the employment list, and exact duration of the employment list. OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION: NOTE: Veteran’s preference credit is applicable for the I level (5 points for veterans, 10 points for disabled veterans). To be eligible for this credit, you must be applying for this position within five years from your most recent date of: (1) honorable discharge from active military service; or, (2) discharge from a military or veterans’ hospital where treatment and confinement were for a disability incurred during active military service; or, (3) completion of education or training funded by a Federal Educational Assistance Act. No time limit exists for veterans with 30% or more disability. To receive veteran’s preference points, you must: (1) check the Veteran’s Preference Points box on the employment application form, (2) submit a copy of your Form DD214 to the Human Resources Department on or before the test date, and (3) pass all phases of the examination process. The preference points will be added to your final test score. Appointee may be subject to a post-offer medical evaluation or examination.
