| Under direction, assigns, supervises, inspects and performs the work of a moderate to large staff of Custody Support Assistants, clerical staff and inmate workers performing a variety of tasks within a correctional facility. Custody Support Assistants maintain security and order of assigned areas within a detention facility; receive, store and issue a variety of materials, supplies, equipment and commissary items; assist with the processing and assignment of inmates; and supervise inmates in minor maintenance or recreational activities. |

Typical Tasks:
|
Supervises, trains, schedules, assigns, reviews, evaluates, and, as needed, performs the work of Custody Support Assistants and clerical staff within a correctional facility;
Assesses workload, establishes priorities, assigns and reviews work to ensure timely completion of work;
Reviews work performed to insure that it meets standards;
Counsels and disciplines staff;
Selects or recommends the selection of subordinate staff;
Assists in developing policies, procedures and work standards;
Interprets policies, procedures, rules, regulations and standards for subordinate staff;
Assists in the development of the unit's budget and monitoring expenditures;
Provides for a safe working environment by ensuring that employees and inmate workers receive proper orientation, training and supervision and by ensuring that tools and equipment are maintained in a satisfactory manner;
Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
Works with other department supervisors and managers to recognize problems and develop solutions;
Conducts and participates in staff meetings;
Performs other work as required. |

Employment Standards:
|
Sufficient education, training and work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge and ability areas, and ability to perform the typical tasks listed above.
Some positions may require a valid California Driver's License and the ability to qualify for a County Driver's permit.
Experience Note: A candidate would normally acquire the knowledge and ability areas listed below by training and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and approximately three years experience performing work equivalent to that of a Custody Support Assistant within Santa Clara County. Completion of college level coursework in supervision or management, or work experience as a lead worker or supervisor is highly desirable.
Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of supervision, training, and effective discipline, including the knowledge of principles involved in the supervision of inmates;
Modern methods of recordkeeping and inventory control;
The use of modern office equipment, including computers;
Methods, practices, tools and equipment used in building and facility maintenance;
Work scheduling methods;
Work safety practices and procedures;
Rules, regulations and standards regarding the provision of services to inmates, especially regarding clothing, property, commissary and mail.
Ability to:
Plan, organize, assign, coordinate, direct, train, evaluate and participate in the work of Custody Support Assistants and others performing inmate services and facility maintenance functions within a correctional setting;
Assist in the preparation and interpretation of policies, procedures, rules, regulations and standards;
Develop and maintain good working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
Prepare reports and maintain records. |
