Correctional Health Services provides integrated medical, dental, mental health, and chemical dependency treatment to the incarcerated adult population and medical and dental care to the juvenile hall population of San Mateo County. Correctional Food Services provides meals to adults and juveniles while in custody that are heart healthy and compliant with state guidelines

  • Medical services include health screening, treatment, education, and 24-hour emergency response for juveniles and adults.
  • Clinic appointments are available by referral and upon request and include chronic care for hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and HIV; obstetric, orthopedic, and urgent care.
  • Dental services, including treatment and medication for urgent dental conditions and extractions, for adults and juveniles.
  • Mental health services include crisis intervention, evaluation, treatment, psychiatric medication, behavior management, and continuing care referrals.
  • Day treatment services are provided to mentally ill men and women in the Life Skills Program at the Maguire Correctional Facility.
  • Acute care services are contracted through the Santa Clara County Correctional Treatment Center.
  • Weekly group therapy.
  • cognitive behavioral approach to addiction and recovery; and
  • re-entry services for those transitioning back into the community.

The ideal candidate will have Emergency Room or ICU experience, a strong Med/surg or Telementary foundation experience.

 Examples Of Duties:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Establish and implement nursing care plans for each patient through assessment, development, activation and evaluation.
  • Organize, assign and supervise duties and responsibilities of other staff members as a team leader. 
  • Perform nursing care following prescribed rules, policies, protocol and procedures.  Identify problems, assist in data gathering, propose solutions and participate in evaluation of quality assurance issues. 
  • Work with patient and their families to provide in-hospital and after-hospital follow-up through teaching and referral. 
  • Orient and teach new staff members of the nursing team and students. 
  • Participate in educational programs to maintain level of expertise. 
  • Participate in non-clinical assignments which may include maintaining records, preparing reports and/or serving on special committees. 
  • Maintain records and prepare reports. 
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 Qualifications:
Note: The level and scope of the knowledge and skills listed below are related to job duties as defined under Distinguishing Characteristics.

Licensure/Certification: 
  • Staff Nurse Trainee: Possession of a California interim registered nursing permit.
  • Staff Nurse: Possession of a California license as a Registered Nurse or equivalent.

Knowledge of: 

  • Nurse Practice Act.  Current nursing and related medical theory and skills necessary to administer nursing care within assigned clinical setting.
  • Safety and infection control practices. 
  • Clinical systems, supplies and equipment.
Skill/Ability to: 
  • Perform nursing procedures required for assigned clinical setting. 
  • Comply with clinical procedures and policies. 
  • Maintain professional nurse-patient relationships. 
  • Work harmoniously with other personnel. 
  • Follow safety practices. 
  • Assist in the instruction of other nursing and paraprofessional personnel. 
  • Maintain accurate records and preparing reports.  

Requirement: Selected candidate must successfully pass a background investigation, including fingerprints and new hire physical.
