San Mateo Medical Center is recruiting full-time and part-time adult psychiatrists. We offer an opportunity to provide great psychiatric care to those who really need it, in a relaxed yet intellectually stimulating teaching hospital located only minutes from San Francisco and Stanford University.

San Mateo Medical Center is San Mateo County’s public hospital and clinics health care system. The flagship main hospital campus is a full-service acute hospital with 34 inpatient psych beds and a 24-hour separate psychiatric emergency unit, along with a medical emergency department, 70 med-surg and ICU beds, and 120 rehab beds. A thriving medical-psychiatry program supports the main campus clinics. There, our staff of psychiatrists and psychologists provides consultation and ongoing care to the primary care and medical-surgical clinics, and at the HIV, senior care, and pain clinics.

San Mateo County is a national leader in community mental health services with a commitment to excellence in outpatient care. Our award-winning Psychiatric Residency Training Program is based at the Medical Center, and staff psychiatrists are invited to join the faculty and participate in training residents as well as the psychology interns.

Typical work assignments:

  • In Psychiatry Emergency Services (PES), the psychiatrist can expect to see an average of 6 patients during the day shift and 5 at night, typically writing admission orders and notes on one-third of these. One day per month, each inpatient psychiatrist also provides coverage for the consultation/liaison service, seeing an average of 2 new cases.
