You will work within the scope of laboratory policies and procedures to provide specimen processing, test performance and result reporting. You will perform test procedures authorized by the medical laboratory director with the degree of skill commensurate with individual education, training, experience and technical abilities. Also, you will insure that all laboratory testing is performed according to established protocols or procedures. You will exercise professional judgment in evaluation and assessment of test performance, sample integrity, result accuracy and validity. Also, you will follow all safety practices and maintain ongoing competency to ensure high quality testing services.

 Examples Of Duties:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Perform microbiological examinations on a variety of specimens using morphological, cultural, biochemical, and serological identification of micro-organisms.
     
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of blood and urine using standard procedures.
     
  • Perform routine hematological examinations such as complete blood count, coagulation studies, sedimentation rate, etc.
     
  • Perform blood banking procedures including typing, grouping, and cross matching of blood for transfusion.
     
  • Perform serological examinations using a variety of techniques on various clinical specimens.
     
  • Prepare culture media, stains, reagents and stock solutions.
     
  • Operate and care for laboratory equipment and assumes responsibility for preventive maintenance.
     
  • Perform all quality control tests required by procedures and prepare quality control reports.
     
  • Maintain records of laboratory results, quality control data, and laboratory procedures.
     
  • Assist in laboratory quality assurance procedures, data gathering and problem-solving.
     
  • Compile and prepare periodic reports.
     
  • Assist in training and guiding laboratory assistants and paraprofessional employees, as well as teaching other technologists new procedures.
     
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 Qualifications:
License: Possession of valid Clinical Laboratory Scientist license issued by the State of California, ASCP Preferred.

Experience and Education:
Clinical Laboratory experience and education that provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities for a hospital clinical lab setting. Typically this would include two years of experience in a medical laboratory working as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist.

Knowledge and Skills:
Current knowledge of hospital laboratory technology, including the principles and application of interpretation of tests for clinical departments of chemistry, microbiology, blood banking, serology and hematology; and maintenance and QC as required in a clinical lab setting. Skill needed in various areas of the laboratory with ability to evaluate test validity, analyzing and troubleshoot QC, and follow lab policy and procedures.

Other Requirements:
Clinical Laboratory Scientists may be required to work on a rotational shift basis including coverage on weekends and holidays, and on occasion may be called in for emergencies to cover a department.
