San Mateo Medical Center is located in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area. Our staff enjoy an excellent environment equipped with sophisticated technology, while working in a friendly, family-type atmosphere. Working side-by-side with surgeons and nurses, major surgical areas are represented, including orthopedics, general, gynecology, peripheral cardiovascular, renal, ophthalmology, plastic and neuro surgery.

Under supervision of professional nursing personnel, Surgical Technologists assist in carrying out aseptic procedures and in the general preparation of the operating room and instruments prior to surgery and after surgery; and during surgery, act as part of the surgical team, handing instruments and surgical supplies to the surgeon. Surgical Technologists must be able to work effectively in emergency or tense situations and be alert to the needs of the surgeon during surgery.

Ideal Candidate: Experienced Certified Surgical Technologist with knowledge of instruments, procedures, and equipment for multiple specialties.

 Examples Of Duties:
Key Responsibilities:  As an active surgical team member, assist nurses and surgeons in the preoperative care of patients, perform the aseptic preparation of the operating room and instruments prior to surgery, and hand instruments and surgical supplies to the surgeon during surgery.

 Qualifications:
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is completion of an approved training program in the duties of an Surgical Technologist.

Knowledge of: Basic anatomy and physiology; practices and techniques of asepsis and their application; various types of instruments and surgical supplies used in surgical procedures.

Skill/Ability to: Understand the instructions of the medical and nursing staff and to carry them out precisely and quickly; engage in continuous active work requiring long periods of standing and physical exertion; exercise a reasonable amount of manual dexterity in the handling of instruments and surgical supplies; work closely and effectively with members of the surgical team; work effectively in emergency or tense situations and be alert to the needs of surgeons during surgery.

The final filing date will be posted 5 days in advance in the Human Resources Department of the County. The examination will consist of a combination performance test/panel interview (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or a screening committee may select those applicants whose education and/or experience appear to best meet the needs of the position. Qualified applicants will be notified of the date, time and place of the tests. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California, and applicants must participate at their own expense.
