Under general direction, performs systems programming for the installation, operation and maintenance of systems software for the Information Services Department. Identifies and corrects errors which have caused abnormal termination of systems software. Performs related duties as required.

 Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is the fully qualified working level of systems programmer. Incumbents are expected to identify and resolve independently all but the most complex problems causing abnormal system terminations or response time degradation, and to assist in resolving problems causing a major system failure.

The Systems Support Analyst series is distinguished from the Programmer Analyst series in that the latter develops application systems and programs to process the information of operating departments. It is further distinguished from Systems Support Supervisor by the latter's supervisory responsibility for a major section of the Systems Support Division

 Examples of Duties:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Tests, evaluates, recommends, installs, maintains, customizes, regression tests, and provides technical support and maintenance for various system software products.

2. Configures and implements system software generations and definitions.

3. Performs system performance management and assists in capacity planning.

4. Assists Computer Operations and Teleprocessing Support with training, system and network problems, and automating operational procedures.

5. Assists application developers in diagnosing routine and complex application system problems.

6. Reviews vendor proposals, contracts, system hardware and software configurations, and maintenance support agreements for technical accuracy, and provides recommendations.

7. Performs Local Area Network and Wide Area Network design and support functions including reviewing configurations, performance tuning, and capacity management.

8. Monitors and controls the storage of data on disk to ensure efficient performance and space utilization.

9. Analyzes and resolves complex systems problems including isolation and resolution of hardware and system software problems.

10. Performs data base design functions; monitors database performance; ensures the maintenance of the data bases including data base recovery.

11. Assists in the design of application systems providing technical advice on alternatives with focus on optimizing available computer resources and performance.

12. Provides technical assistance for specially assigned projects and other work as required.

13. Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.

Incumbents in the Systems Support Analyst II class are eligible for promotion to Systems Support Analyst III upon meeting the minimum requirements and receipt of satisfactory work progress reports.

 Minimum Requirements:

Education:
Thirty (30) semester (45 quarter) units of completed, post high-school coursework from an accredited university or technical school in Computer Science, or a closely related field.
Experience:
Three (3) years of work experience, within the last five years, performing systems operations support at the enterprise level in any of the following: A. Application Administration on: AIX & Windows 2003 DB2 or J2EE & Websphere environment. B. Server or Systems Administration/Programming in Windows 2000/2003, S/390 or Z/OS, LINUX, UNIX, Java, .Net, Exchange, ISA, Active Directory or SMS. C. Database Administration on MS SQL, DB2 or Oracle. D. Administration of Network Infrastructure of switches and routers or IDS Modules.

Application Server Administrator II:
Education: 
Thirty semester (45 quarter) units of completed, post high-school coursework from an accredited university or technical school in Computer Science, Information Technology or a closely related field.  Or a bachelor's degree in a qualifying field has not been conferred.
AND
Experience: 
Three years of experience, within the last five years, performing systems operations support at the enterprise level in either:

  • Windows 2000/2003 server administration, or
  • Application and Database administrations with emphasis on .Net, Com+, IIS, SQL 2000 or 2005.

Substitution:
An additional year of qualifying experience may substitute for up to 15 semester (23 quarter) units of the education requirement.
