Under general supervision, operates state of the art radio and communication equipment in order to dispatch emergency public safety vehicles to incidents involving the public peace and safety; performs related duties as required.

 Distinguishing Characteristics:
Class are characterized by responsibility to coordinate and dispatch Sheriff's public safety vehicles to emergency and routine calls for service. This class is distinguished from the class of Sheriff's Communication Dispatcher I in that the latter is primarily responsible for receiving and evaluating the initial call for service. The Sheriff's Communication Dispatcher II is required to maintain continuous communication with units in the field and exercises judgment when unprecedented situations arise.

 Examples of Duties:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Operates and monitors radio and communication equipment in accordance with FCC regulations, in order to dispatch Sheriff's units to routine and emergency service calls.

2. Prioritizes calls for service, monitors the location and status of units in the field, and assigns unit backup with the assistance of the Computer Aided Dispatch system.

3. Simultaneously receives, keyboards and transmits information/patrol assignments to units in the field; enters, retrieves and updates information stored in the computer.

4. Keeps the Watch Commander informed of situations involving officer safety; dispatches additional personnel and notifies other jurisdictions or agencies at deputy, supervisor or Watch Commander request.

5. Monitors radio transmissions from other law enforcement agencies and responds to requests for emergency assistance.

6. May on a rotational basis, function as a lead over positions assigned to Call Intake/Telephone Report Unit which includes overseeing unit activities, assigning and reviewing work, providing input on Work Performance Evaluations, recommending disciplinary actions, and resolving the more difficult incidents.

7. May serve as a trainer, providing instruction and assistance to Sheriff's Communications staff.

8. Makes inquiries into county, state and federal national computer data banks to obtain information requested by officers or other law enforcement personnel.

9. May receive and process emergency calls or complaints from the public.

10. May perform matron duties on occasion; performs clerical duties as they relate to the service of the public and to the maintenance of Sheriff's Office records.

11. Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.

 Minimum Requirements:

Experience: 
One year of emergency dispatching experience  AND  one additional year of call-intake (911) or dispatching experience.  Qualifying experience must include using a computer-aided dispatching system in a communications center with a law enforcement agency within the past five years.

Keyboarding: 

Position requires typing skills of 35 wpm.  A recent certificate of typing speed may be required at the interview.
