| Distinguishing Characteristics: | ||
| Incumbents of this class are characterized by the assignment of responsibilities involving the supervision, delegation and review of work performed by a staff engaged in a variety of land surveying activities both in the field and in the office. This class is distinguished by the responsibility to independently plan, coordinate and resolve difficult legal and other problems related to survey functions, as well as the supervision of subordinate personnel. Supervising Land Surveyor is distinguished from Survey Division Chief by the latter's responsibility to plan and organize the work of either the Surveyor Field or Mapping Division of the Department of Transportation/Flood Control. | ||
| Examples of Duties: | ||
| Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Supervise field personnel engaged in surveying preliminary construction, property, subdivision, topographic, aerial or other related survey projects. 2. Supervise the work of a staff engaged in research, analysis, and computations relative to retracement, land, cadastral and geodetic surveys and the preparation of Record of Survey maps in compliance with state laws and county ordinances. 3. Supervise the examination by technicians of records of survey, corner records, parcel maps and tentative and final maps filed with the County Surveyor. Review and approve their work for accuracy and conformity to accepted land surveying practices and other legal requirements. Sign and seal all documents in accordance with state law. Review maps for conformity to planning regulations, and certify that all conditions of approval and other legal requirements have been met. Assign maps for examination to subordinate technicians and review their work for accuracy and conformity to accepted land surveying practices and other legal requirements. 4. Supervise the development, review and preparation of legal documents for content, accuracy, completeness and conveyance of real property interests. 5. Consult with other supervisors to determine training needs. Plan programs to instruct personnel in the various phases of surveying, mapping and supervision. 6. Confer with representatives of various departments, governmental agencies, private engineers, surveyors, title insurance industry, and land developers on matters affecting mapping, land boundary determinations, legal access, real property rights and perpetuation of survey monuments. 7. Advise and coordinate with private engineers, surveyors, developers and departments on current and proposed survey projects. 8. Analyze land, cadastral, and geodetic surveys, and right of way engineering. Write legal descriptions and documents, establish proof of access, review offers of dedication, and prepare presentations to the Planning Commission. 9. Receive survey requests, examine them for completeness and intention of survey. Prepare cost estimates of survey projects, including on site inspections. Identify problem areas and propose solutions. 10. Perform photogrammetric calculations and layout for aerial mapping and other survey projects. 11. Supervise field personnel engaged in determining coordinates of control points and other survey locations using Global Positioning System satellites. 12. | LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION Must be a State of California Licensed Land Surveyor or Registered Civil Engineer authorized to practice land surveying. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Frequent sitting, occasional walking, standing, bending, squatting, Requires fine manipulation in both hands. Continuusly required to reach above and below the shoulder level. Must frequently demonstrate near vision and occasionally demonstrate far vision. Occasionally required to lift and carry 10 pounds or less. WORKING CONDITIONS Required to drive a County vehicle. Occasionally works near equipment and machinery on rough, uneven, rocky, or slippery surfaces. Occasionally exposed to dust, gas, toxic materials, noise, and extremes in temperature or humidity. Continuously works inside and occasionally works outside. Occasionally uses specialized protective equipment or clothing. |

| Minimum Requirements: | ||
| Experience: Three years of progressively responsible experience in land surveying. License: A valid California Class C driver license is required at time of appointment. Employees in this class may be required to use personal vehicles and show proof of automobile liability insurance. Registration: Must be currently licensed to practice Land Surveying in the State of California or be a Registered Civil Engineer authorized to practice land surveying. 3/12/07 |
