The Psychiatric Technician I describes positions engaged in performing basic nursing and psychiatric services for mentally or emotionally disturbed patients in a hospital or clinical setting; performs related duties as required.

 Distinguishing Characteristics:
Class is the journey level within the Psychiatric Technician classification series.  Positions are characterized by their assignment to psychiatric facility or clinical setting which may include administering medications.

 Examples of Duties:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Provides nursing, custodial and personal care of emotionally disturbed patients such as dispensing medications, observing and evaluating patients' behavior, recognizing symptoms and potential violence of patients, assisting patients in meeting hygiene and nutritional needs.

2. Maintains a safe environment for patients; may participate in restraining or subduing agitated patients.

3. Participates in therapy sessions where the goal is to induce the patient to develop social skills, increase self-esteem and awareness of reality.

4. Plans and participates in various kinds of rehabilitation, occupational, recreational and group activities.

5. Interviews and screens patients to assist in determining what methods or combination of treatment methods may be most beneficial to patient; assigns patients to group or individual therapy; maintains case load on patients.

6. Conducts home visits to evaluate environment; may recommend patient be placed in board and home care when conditions warrant it.

7. Maintains patient chart, noting such patient behavior as anxiety, withdrawal, mental or physical progress or regression.

8. Assists in determining advisability of discharging patients based on observation.

9. Transports patients to and from other treatment and custodial facilities and civil, juvenile and other hearings.

10. Cooperates with professional and technical staff to promote better utilization of resources with respect to patient care.

11. Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.

Psychiatric Technicians I and II must possess and maintain the Psychiatric Technician License issued by the California Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician Examiners.
