| Under general supervision, monitors and controls the communications network through the use of automated real time surveillance equipment to ensure that all systems are functioning properly; performs related duties as required. | ||
| Distinguishing Characteristics: | ||
| Incumbents in this class are assigned to the Network Control Center of the Communications Division, Department of Information Services, and are characterized by their responsibility to monitor telecommunications network system performance, analyze alarm conditions and attempt remote repair and/or rerouting of service and generating service requests as necessary. This class is distinguished from the class of Network Analyst by the latter's responsibility for complex systems analysis and design, and long term and disaster recovery planning and implementation. | ||
| Examples of Duties: | ||
| Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Performs real time surveillance of system components and reroutes calls/data transmissions to maintain adequate service levels. 2. Analyzes all alarm situations; conducts fault isolation to determine the source of malfunction and appropriate solution. 3. Administers approved plans for recovery of problem conditions, including attempting to implement remote fixes or rerouting service. 4. Informs the appropriate operations work group or on call personnel of trouble conditions; conducts out of hours callout if condition warrants. 5. Performs daily routine, automated remote testing of all switches to locate any malfunction. 6. Audits the surveillance monitoring system to ensure its accuracy and integrity. 7. Provides recommendations for the development of disaster avoidance and recovery plans and procedures; identifies potential disasters, recognizes problems and develops and tests recovery plans for a finite number of potential trouble conditions. 8. Coordinates the efforts of separate groups to regain service when problem conditions cross organizational lines. 9. Acts as a central point for network related inquiries. 10. Provides vacation and temporary relief as required. |

| Minimum Requirements: | ||
| Education: Thirty semester (45 quarter) units of completed, post high-school coursework in telecommunications, electronics, or a closely related field. (Trade School instruction is calculated based on 10 hours of classroom instruction = 1 unit) A list of coursework must be submitted with the application if applicant does not possess a bachelor’s degree or higher in one of the qualifying fields of study. Experience: Two years experience maintaining AND supporting networking functions for integrated voice and data networks. Experience must include a minimum of one year with at least three of following technologies combined: DACS (digital access/cross-connect system);Microwave Communications;T1 to OC3 circuits;WAN/LAN/ATM;PBX;800 MHz Radio Substitution: One additional year of qualifying experience may substitute for the required education. |
