Under direction, is engaged in a variety of land surveying projects; plans, coordinates and resolves legal and other problems related to survey functions; performs related duties as required.

 Distinguishing Characteristics:
Incumbents of this class are characterized by the assignment of responsibilities in a variety of land surveying activities both in the field and in the office. This class is distinguished by the responsibility to independently plan, coordinate and resolve difficult legal and other problems related to survey functions. May also act in a lead capacity over technical staff. Land Surveyor is distinguished from Supervising Land Surveyor by the latter’s responsibility to supervise, delegate and review of work performed by a staff engaged in a variety of land surveying activities both in the field and in the office.

 Examples of Duties:
1. Signs and seals all documents in accordance with state law. Reviews maps for conformity to planning regulations and accepted land surveying practices, and certifies that all conditions of approval and other legal requirements have been met.

2. Provides lead direction over the examination by technicians of records of survey, corner records, parcel maps and tentative and final maps filed with the County Surveyor. Review and approve their work for accuracy and conformity to accepted land surveying practices and other legal requirements. Sign and seal all documents in accordance with state law. Review maps for conformity to planning regulations, and certify that all conditions of approval and other legal requirements have been met. Assign maps for examination to subordinate technicians and review their work for accuracy and conformity to accepted land surveying practices and other legal requirements.

3. Develops and prepares legal documents and reviews them for content accuracy, completeness and conveyance of real property interests.

4. Consults with other supervisors to determine training needs. Plans programs to instruct personnel in the various phases of surveying, mapping and supervision.

5. Confers with representatives of various departments, governmental agencies, private engineers, surveyors, title insurance industry, and land developers on matters affecting mapping, land boundary determinations, legal access, real property rights and perpetuation of survey monuments.

6. Advises and coordinates with private engineers, surveyors, developers and departments on current and proposed survey projects.

7. Analyzes land, cadastral, and geodetic surveys, and right of way engineering. Writes legal descriptions and documents, establishes proof of access, reviews offers of dedication, and prepares presentations to the Planning Commission.

8. Receives survey requests, examines them for completeness and intention of survey. Prepares cost estimates of survey projects, including on site inspections. Identifies problem areas and proposes solutions.

9. Performs photogrammetric calculations and layout for aerial mapping and other survey projects.

10. Prepares correspondence and special reports.

11. Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION: Must be a State of California Licensed Land Surveyor or Registered Civil Engineer authorized to practice land surveying.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Frequent sitting, occasional walking, standing, bending, squatting, Requires fine manipulation in both hands. Continuously required to reach above and below the shoulder level. Must frequently demonstrate near vision and occasionally demonstrate far vision. Occasionally required to lift and carry 10 pounds or less.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Required to drive a County vehicle. Occasionally works near equipment and machinery on rough, uneven, rocky, or slippery surfaces. Occasionally exposed to dust, gas, toxic materials, noise, and extremes in temperature or humidity. Continuously works inside and occasionally works outside. Occasionally uses specialized protective equipment or clothing.

 Minimum Requirements:
Must possess a valid Land Surveyor's license from the State of California or be a Registered Civil Engineer authorized to practice land surveying.
