Under general supervision, performs routine technical engineering duties in the field or office; performs related duties as required.

 Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is the second working level in the Engineering Series. Positions in this class are characterized by assignment of routine tasks which follow well established procedures or instructions. Assignments are typically limited to a specialized phase or segment of a project, although incumbents may perform varied duties as a member of a team assigned responsibility for the completion of an entire project.

This class is distinguished from Engineering Technician III in that the latter is assigned duties of a wider and more difficult nature which may entail responsibility to supervise other project team members.

 Examples of Duties:
1. Draws plans, profiles, and cross sections of streets or other improvements in ink from surveyor's field books or other specific sources; assists in the preparation of final designs, maps, or construction drawings; estimates earthwork quantities and performs elementary engineering calculations; performs necessary research and calculations in order to draft cadastral, geodetic or topographic maps; may adjust maps to reflect demographic and other changes as required.

2. Assists in conducting title and property ownership research; prepares the legal descriptions and documents following established standards; may prepare right of way maps; calculates bearings, distances and areas.

3. Performs materials sampling and routine materials tests in the field or laboratory such as sand equivalency or sieve analysis; tabulates amount of material delivered to construction site.

4. As a member of survey field crew, measures distances and bearings; performs chaining and leveling duties; keeps detailed chaining notes; performs necessary calculations, making corrections to measurements due to environmental factors. In a training capacity, learns to operate standard surveying instruments.

5. Inventories and inspects traffic control devices for proper location, visibility and physical condition; determines if device meets published standards; measures and marks traffic signs with appropriate codes; programs and installs traffic signal controllers; troubleshoots and performs minor emergency repairs to traffic equipment.

6. Conducts simple single area drainage studies; collects data for statistical analysis; files, indexes and assists public in the usage of photos, maps and other materials; updates maps and records; following instructions, prepares exhibits for presentation using information provided.

7. May make field reviews and assist professional engineers in identifying problems.

8. Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.

 Minimum Requirements:
Engineering Technician:
EDUCATION:

Successfully completed high school level coursework in algebra, geometry, or trigonometry and possession of High School Diploma or GED.
EXPERIENCE:
One year of technical civil engineering experience which included the application of civil engineering formulas, theories, and practices to the construction, design, and inspection of public works projects.
SUBSTITUTION:
Fifteen (15) semester or twenty-three (23) quarter units of completed college coursework from an accredited university in civil engineering, engineering construction technology, or a closely related field may substitute for one year of the required experience.

Surveyor Technician:
EDUCATION:

Successfully completed high school level classes in Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry.
EXPERIENCE:
One year assisting a field surveying crew. Fifteen semester (23 quarter) units of completed college coursework in engineering or a closely related field may substitute for up to six months of qualifying experience.
