This is an extended range class that performs psychiatric work involving the examination, diagnosis, and treatment of patients. Positions performs related duties as required.

 Distinguishing Characteristics:
Positions in this class are assigned either to a Mental Health Clinic or to the Inpatient Unit, and report to the Deputy Director or Assistant Deputy Director of Medical Services. Incumbents who are Certified as Diplomates by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology are placed in a higher band.

 Examples of Duties:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Examines, diagnoses, and administers treatment to patients, including prescribing medications.

2. Provides consultation and education to other mental health program professionals and agencies.

3. Provides direction to nurses, clinical therapists, and other personnel on precommitment screening teams, at clinics, or in community mental health organizational units.

4. Coordinates the work of the unit with work of various community groups and agencies.

5. Prepares comprehensive and concise psychiatric reports and documentation in medical records.

6. Maintains up to date knowledge of the practice of Psychiatry through continuing medical education and reading journals and publications.

7. Participates in Peer Review/Medications Monitoring Committee as required.

8. Provides individual, group psychotherapy and medication visits.

9. Confers with patients' relatives regarding illness and treatment. Gathers collateral information and participates in multidisciplinary treatment planning.

10. Leads team conferences and provides clinical direction in units to which assigned. Trains and directs assigned personnel by providing consultation in peer review discussions.

11. Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION

Possession of a valid Physicians' license issued by the California Board of Medical Examiners, completion of an accredited three year residency in Psychiatry, and possession of a valid Drug Enforcement Administration Registration Certificate.
