Under direction, conducts investigations, in support of the District Attorney’s Office, of alleged or suspected violations of criminal and civil laws; performs related duties as required.

 Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is the full working level in the District Attorney Investigator series. Incumbents are characterized by their independent analysis of evidence and ability to perform complex investigations using advanced investigative techniques; may perform lead duties and provide training to lower-level investigators; may oversee or coordinate a small specialized unit or field office with limited or no additional investigative staff assigned to it.

 Examples of Duties:
1. Plans and conducts investigations to support prosecution of a wide variety of criminal and civil cases including complex fraud and alleged corruption of governmental agencies. May coordinate a special unit or field office, and serve as a lead for investigators and other support staff, as assigned.

2. Investigates complex criminal violations that come within the jurisdiction of the County’s Grand Jury, violations of corporate security laws, complex consumer fraud violations, and highly sensitive or confidential criminal or civil matters.

3. Gathers pertinent information and evidence by interviewing complainants, witnesses, and suspects; investigates crime scenes and conducts intelligence and evidence-gathering activities. Prepares reports and recommends issuance of complaints.

4. Investigates and gathers intelligence information related to organized crime activities.

5. Establishes and maintains working relationships with informants and other law enforcement agencies.

6. Coordinates with Deputy District Attorneys regarding the sequence of witnesses, and assists in trial preparations. Appears in court and testifies as an expert witness.

7. May serve as a lead over lower-level investigators; provides training, guidance and work assignments and reviews work in the absence of the supervisor.

8. Operates scientific and electronic equipment for investigative purposes.

9. Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.

The duties and responsibilities of positions in these classifications are directly related to the law enforcement function, requiring incumbents to be County Peace Officers.

 Minimum Requirements:
Option A: One year of experience as a California District Attorney Investigator (PC830.1) and possession of a current Intermediate (or higher) CA P.O.S.T. Certificate.
Option B: Two years of experience as a California Law Enforcement Investigator (Detective) and possession of a current Intermediate (or higher) CA P.O.S.T. Certificate.

Certificate:
Must be a graduate of a PC830.1 or PC830.2 academy.
