| Positions in this series perform a variety of professional legal work involved in criminal prosecution including investigation, trial preparation, and legal research. Positions perform related duties as required. | ||
| Distinguishing Characteristics: | ||
| This is the third level of the series. Under direction, incumbents are assigned difficult cases involving complex legal principles which require demonstrated ability to effectively perform the complete range of legal work in the field of criminal prosecution. | ||
| Examples of Duties: | ||
| 1. Investigates, researches, and prepares cases for prosecution; evaluates evidence, determines the nature of the crime and the justification for prosecution; interviews witnesses. 2. Interviews and advises law enforcement officers and the public in regard to the issuance of criminal complaints. 3. Presents and prosecutes cases before County courts; presents cases before the Grand Jury. 4. Represents the people of the County at arraignments, preliminary hearings and trials. 5. Negotiates with defense attorneys regarding the disposition or modification of charges. 6. Presents opening statements, interrogates and cross examines witnesses; argues points of law, and makes final arguments or summations. 7. Conducts legal research and prepares briefs and opinions. 8. Receives complaints, evaluates evidence and determines the nature of the crime and justification for prosecution. 9. | Applicants must be members of the State Bar of California before appointment. Incumbents must qualify for promotion within the time specified in the applicable Memorandum of Understanding or be terminated. |

| Minimum Requirements: | ||
| License: Active membership in the California State Bar. Applications will be accepted from candidates who are members in good standing of California State Bar and have been assigned a license number, but have inactive membership status. Experience: Three years of criminal trial experience as an attorney - OR - Five years of trial experience as an attorney. |
