| Distinguishing Characteristics: | ||
This is the fully qualified working level in the Mental Health Nursing series. Incumbents of this class are expected to perform the full range of professional Mental Health Nursing duties with a minimum of supervision and in-service training, and often serve as a lead or training nurse. The Mental Health Nurse series is distinguished from the Registered Nurse series by the special knowledge and skill required to treat mentally ill patients. Positions report to a Mental Health Nurse Manager. |

| Examples of Duties: | ||
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate direct patient care according to accepted standards of practice, in a psychiatric unit or a mental health program. 2. Observe, record and report medications and treatments, and perform assessments of the patient's physical and emotional needs; interprets and reacts appropriately to patient's response to treatment, medication or specific circumstance; discusses plan of patient care with the treatment team. 3. Administer psychotropic and restrictive medications, such as coagulants, insulin and narcotics; adjust and observe functioning of equipment, such as intravenous, breathing, suctioning and draining apparatus. In emergencies, take appropriate action. 4. Perform individual instruction with patients and their families regarding specialized medical and emotional problems. 5. Interact with and observe patients and conduct nursing evaluations of behavior and conditions for indications of patient's progress. 6. Participate in patient group and family group therapy sessions; conduct spontaneous brief individual counseling of the patients and family members; participate in assigned patient government, recreational social skills, and occupational therapy. 7. Participate in departmental meetings, including shift reports, diagnostic and disposition staff meetings, departmental and nursing in-service training sessions and departmental administrative meetings. 8. | Minimum Requirements: | ||
| License and Certification: Must possess and maintain a California Registered Nurse License and Healthcare Provider level Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Experience: One year of professional psychiatric nursing experience. Include the approximate number of beds in each mental health hospital or unit when describing work experience. Substitution: A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing may be substituted for up to six months of the required experience. 1) Must be available to work any shift, weekends and holidays. Shift differentials are provided. 2) On the locked psychiatric unit, the nature of the work requires the ability to receive training in and apply Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) techniques to protect oneself, restrain and control assaultive patients, and to assist with or apply restraints to secure patients to the bed. 3) On the hospital nursing floors, the work environment may involve exposure to assaultive and combative patients, and the ability to assist with or apply restraints to secure patients to the bed. 4) For these positions must pass a background investigation and verification of employment history. 9/3/08 |
