| These extended range classifications perform the full range of assignments related to the field of mental health services, including individual and group psychotherapy, evaluations and investigations, and professional counseling in accordance with applicable professional licensing laws. Within these extended range classifications, incumbents are assigned to the band appropriate to their degrees and licensure; perform related duties as required. | ||
| Distinguishing Characteristics: | ||
| This is the journey level of the series, encompassing three bands of licensure: MFCC, LCSW, and LP. Within the scope of licensure, positions provide psychotherapy, psychotherapeutic treatment and counseling for clients exhibiting a variety of mental health and related disorders in a clinic or institutional setting. Incumbents are experienced, licensed professionals. Additionally, incumbents may be assigned to participate in special projects, or to be staff liaison to a regional and/or county wide mental health services program segment. | ||
| Examples of Duties: | ||
| Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Screens prospective clients to determine appropriateness for program services; provides orientation sessions for clients deemed appropriate. 2. Conducts intake assessments; prepares diagnostic evaluations which includes obtaining personal, social, emotional, and substance abuse history; determines the cause, nature and severity of the client's current mental status. 3. Develops, evaluates and implements goal oriented treatment plans. 4. Provides direct treatment services such as individual and group therapy to a difficult and complex client population; provides treatment services to clients in areas such as inpatient, outpatient, day treatment, AB3632, correctional facilities, and substance abuse. 5. Monitors clients' use and response to medication; reports adverse reactions or failure to maintain stability to psychiatrist. 6. Intervenes in crisis situations when a patient exhibits acute psychiatric symptoms which present an immediate threat to the patient or others. 7. Provides habilitative and socialization services to restore and maintain the best possible functional level of patients with chronic psychological impairments. 8. Develops and/or implements minor and major program changes related to such areas as group structures, treatment goals and directions, the incorporation of newly mandated services, and contract services. 9. Initiates new psychotherapy groups and assigns therapists to groups on the basis of their training ability. 10. Provides consultation to other staff members on a client's history, mental status and previous treatment, and on the community resources available for the treatment of a client. 11. Participates in the staff review of a case; recommends changes in therapeutic techniques, environment, and/or charting to facilitate patient recovery. 12. Recommends when to terminate professional counseling treatment; develops follow up plan and/or revised post treatment techniques and activities. 13. Serves as a consultant or trainer for staff, community agencies, and other professionals on complex client, placement, and mental health issues; provides community outreach and makes special presentations to civic groups. 14. Assists clients and families in understanding the nature of their physical, mental, or emotional disorder; provides emotional support and information to assist them in identifying external stressors that contribute to the client's problems. 15. Acts as liaison and coordinates services between clients and county and/or contract mental health agencies; provides an evaluation of a client's problems and progress for other County agencies. 16. Assesses contract programs to determine if they are sufficient in meeting the treatment needs of clients; monitors contracts such as residential facilities treatment, and the outpatient programs for both programmatic and fiscal compliance. 17. Selects, administers, scores, and interprets a wide variety of objective and projective tests including intelligence, personality, aptitude, and achievement tests for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment of mentally ill and emotionally disturbed clients. 18. Prepares case documentation, progress and court reports, conservatorship requests, special reports, proposals, grants, manuals and correspondence. 19. May act as a staff liaison to a regional and/or county wide mental health services program segment; monitors therapeutic and administrative components of the segment. 20. | Clinical Therapist I - Forensics: Must be licensed in California as a Clinical Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist, or Psychologist. 9/20/08 Licensed Clinical Social Worker: Must be licensed in California as an LCSW. 11/14/07 Licensed Psychologist: Must be licensed in California as a Licensed Psychologist. 3/12/07 Marriage and Family Therapist: Must be licensed in California as a Marriage and Family Therapist.
