Positions in this series perform a variety of criminal defense trial work, including investigation and trial preparation; perform related duties as required.

 Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is the entry level of the series. Incumbents are given supervision and guidance by higher-level attorneys on initial assignments; incumbents are given more responsible assignments with less supervision as experience is gained.

 Examples of Duties:
1. Investigates, prepares for trial, and conducts trial defense of adults. Prepares trial strategy and jury instructions.

2. Investigates, prepares for, and conducts defense of juveniles in jurisdictional and dispositional hearings.

3. Appears with and for defendants at court hearings; decides and makes appropriate legal motions and pleas and takes other legal action on behalf of clients.

4. Conducts legal research and prepare legal briefs and opinions.

5. Argues the merits of probation for defendants; prepares appeals, writs and other legal correspondence.

6. Negotiates with prosecuting authorities regarding the disposition or modification of charges.

7. Orders investigations and subpoenas; interviews defendants and witnesses.

8. Assists, advises, and trains lower level attorneys.

9. Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.

Incumbents must qualify for promotion within the time specified in the applicable Memorandum of Understanding or be terminated.

 Minimum Requirements:
