Under direction, provides lead supervision and installs, maintains, and repairs microwave transmitting and receiving equipment, multiplex equipment, fixed and mobile radio equipment, and data transmission and associated electronic equipment; performs related duties as required.

 Distinguishing Characteristics:
Positions in this class are characterized by the assignment of continual responsibility to provide lead supervision over Communications Technicians and Communications Installers, and to perform the most difficult installation, maintenance, and repair of microwave, circuits, radio, telephone or data transmission systems.

Depending upon assignment, incumbents are required to have a thorough knowledge of Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations governing the operation and repair of governmental radio transmitters and receivers.

 Examples of Duties:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Directs the assembly, installation, maintenance and repair of the more complex equipment used with County telecommunications systems and networks.

2. Installs, maintains, and repairs digital and analog microwave radio, fixed and mobile radio, multiplexing, electronic and electromechanical key switching equipment and ancillary electronic/telephone equipment such as encoders, decoders, jacks, wiring, cables and power supplies. Trains others in these tasks.

3. Inspects work of other technicians and performs periodic tests on equipment to ensure compliance with FCC Rules and Regulations and/or quality control directives.

4. Uses personal or laptop computers to install software in switches and circuits and to diagnose problems in and program Integrated Service Digital Network signaling circuits, pagers, two way radios and base stations.

5. Builds simple to moderately complex electronic circuits or devices from instructions of Telecommunications Engineers.

6. Climbs ladders, poles, towers, and structures to install, maintain, repair, or reconfigure radio communications or microwave antennas.

7. Drives truck or van to work sites throughout the County; loads and unloads equipment and parts. Depending on assignment, may reach transmitter sites on mountain peaks by snow cat, skis or snowshoes, or being dropped from a helicopter.

8. Assists in field surveys and prepares reports of conditions found and cost estimates of repairs and installations; requisitions materials and replacement parts.

9. Reviews service records for accuracy of information and to ensure that proper documents are maintained as required by regulations.

10. Attends training in new technologies and trains others.

11. Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.

 Minimum Requirements:
Education:  Fifteen semester (23 quarter) units of completed post-high school coursework in electronics or telecommunications.

Experience:  Four (4) years experience installing, maintaining, and repairing telephone, voicemail or Call Center systems. Experience with Nortel systems is highly desirable.
