Multiple Vacancies - Immediate need for Spanish-English Bilingual Caseworkers

(Additional Compensation for bilingual skills) 

Applications are accepted continuously and will be processed monthly. Applications must be filed by the last day of the month in order to be evaluated the first week of the following month. Example: Applications received by 10/31/09 will be evaluated the first week of November.

The Transitional Assistance Department (TAD) is recruiting for experienced Eligibility Workers (EW) II who conduct interviews to determine eligibility for public assistance programs such as CalWORKS, Food Stamps, Medi-Cal, etc. EW's elicit financial information; instruct clients in the completion of forms; interpret and explain program regulations; and review applications to determine eligibility, compute and authorize grant amounts using a computer based system. EW's discuss employment opportunities and barriers with clients and refer clients to resources. Additionally, EW's prepare reports, records and correspondence and work within established deadlines.

Current vacancies may be for Unclassified positions, which serve at the discretion of the Appointing Authority (employment may be terminated without right of appeal).


Conditions of Employment: Travel throughout the county may be required. Employees will be required to make provision for transportation. At the time of hire, a valid California driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced for the individual providing transportation.
 

 Minimum Requirements:

Experience: Six months within the last 18 months as a journey level eligibility worker in a California Department of Social Services performing duties equivalent to that of an Eligibility Worker II in San Bernardino County.  Candidates who are currently employed as a journey level eligibility worker in a California Department of Social Services are encouraged to apply.  If applying under this recruitment, lateral entry paperwork does not need to be submitted.

Note: Eligibility Worker I and Trainee experience is not considered qualifying and must be listed separately on the application
from time spent as a journey level Eligibility Worker (Eligibility Worker II or above in San Bernardino County).

 Desired Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal, customer service and time management skills. Computer skills are desired. Bilingual skills are highly desirable. EW II's assigned to bilingual caseloads receive additional compensation for verbal and written translation skills.

 Selection Process:
Application Evaluation: There will be a competitive evaluation of experience based on a review of the regular County Application and the Supplemental Questionnaire.

Spanish Bilingual Exam: Bilingual positions require that applicants pass written and oral competency tests to be considered for bilingual vacancies.
