Distinguishing Characteristics:
|
| This is the journey level in the probation series of classes; it is distinguished from the next higher class of Senior Deputy Probation Officer which assists in training activities and community education activities or lead person responsibilities and/or performs the more difficult or complex casework; the incumbents in the Deputy Probation Officer class may also provide custody and security in an institutional setting including counseling and treatment. |

NOTE: The following duties are typical of those performed by incumbents in this class. Other related duties may also be performed; not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual.
DUTIES:
Performs work in one or more of the following probation services:
Court Services Assignments:
1. Investigates and prepares court reports, including legal documents and memos, with recommendation to the court of dispositions of adult and juvenile cases on a structured time basis.
2. Investigates, evaluates, and prepares court reports regarding adult probationers and juvenile wards.
3. Interviews defendants, relatives, witnesses, victims, and others to determine nature of offense, prior record, social history, environmental, economic, and psychological influences.
4. Makes collateral contacts with employers, social agencies, public officers, and others to verify prior history and information.
5. Confers with supervisor to formulate a case plan for rehabilitation and treatment.
6. Maintains case records and prepares periodic reports.
Field Services Assignments:
1. Supervises a caseload of adult and/or juvenile probationers in the community and/or office.
2. Interviews probationers regarding the nature and the conditions of probation, arranges for referral to private and public agencies, and provides a casework plan for follow-up contacts.
3. Monitors and enforces conditions of probation which may require drug testing, search and seizure, and arrest.
4. Counsels adult and juvenile probationers and their families toward rehabilitation; arranges for placement of youth in foster homes and institutions.
5. Prepares case summary reports on progress of probationers and their compliance with probation conditions; recommends continuation, modification, or termination of probation.
6. Maintains case folders and other records relating to assigned cases.
7. Works with other law enforcement agencies, schools and private and public agencies to provide additional services to probationers and to protect the community.
8. Determines restitution where applicable and arranges for reimbursement to victims.
Institutional Assignments:
1. Supervises the work, recreational and personal habits of juvenile wards in a living unit, including care, custody, and control.
2. Counsels juvenile wards and their families to assure compliance with court orders and to achieve a positive adjustment within the community.
3. Prepares progress reports on wards, including recommendations to the juvenile court.
4. Assists in developing activity programs for wards.
5. Strips and searches detainees and rooms in search for contraband.
6. Participates in the detainee grievance and due process institutional procedures.
7. Cares for the medical needs of detainees by issuing medications and providing first aid treatment.
General Assignments:
1. May supervise or train Probation Assistants, volunteers, and/or student interns.
2. Participates in in-service training to update knowledge of the criminal justice process.

Minimum Qualifications:
|
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university, preferably with a degree in social or behavioral sciences.
AND
Either: 1. One year of full-time paid professional experience in correctional work subsequent to the degree in a County, State or Federal probation, parole or law enforcement agency.
Or: 2. One year of social casework experience subsequent to the degree in a County State, or Federal agency.
Or: One year as a Probation Assistant with Sacramento County.
Or: The equivalent of one (1) year as a Probation Assistant (On-Call) with Sacramento County.
NOTE: To compute full-time equivalency of On-Call experience: 173.6 hours = 21.7 days = 1 work month
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Compliance with Government Code: In accordance with California Government Code, Section 1031, each employee shall meet the following minimum standards:
a. Be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship. Any permanent resident alien shall be disqualified from holding a position if his or her application for citizenship is denied.
b. Be at least 18 years of age.
c. Be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record. In addition, a classifiable set of the fingerprints shall be furnished to the Department of Justice and to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
d. Be found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer.
Criminal History and Background Check: Appointees must pass a criminal history and background check, and pursuant to and Background California Government Code, Section 1029, the conviction of a felony is grounds for disqualification from an appointment. Pursuant to Sacramento County Civil Service Rules, candidates found to have been convicted of a felony will be disqualified.
Certificate Required: Completion of required P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards and Training) training for Probation Officers as specified in Section 832 of the Penal Code within one (1) year after appointment as a Deputy Probation Officer.
Arming: Some assignments within the Probation Department require the willingness and capability to be armed. Authorization to carry a weapon while on duty requires a psychological examination confirming fitness to be armed as well as the successful completion of force and weaponry training as required by the department.
Physical Requirements: Incumbents will frequently perform a wide variety of physical tasks such as standing, walking, running, stooping, bending, climbing stairs and lifting probationers which requires strength, coordination, endurance, and agility. In addition, there may be occasional contact with hostile individuals, and incumbents may be subject to physical and verbal abuse while restraining/arresting individuals.
Driver License: Possession of a valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, is required at the time of appointment.
Note: Failure to maintain the appropriate valid California Driver License may constitute cause for dismissal from the class under applicable Civil Service Rules or applicable bargaining agreement.
Hours of Work: Incumbents in this class must be willing to work irregular hours, holidays, and weekends. |
