Salary Information:
Level I: $6,655.50 monthly
Level II: $7,654.25 monthly
Level III: $6,928.67 to $8,419.83 monthly
Level IV: $7.636.83 to $9,745.75 monthly
Level V: $8,426.83 to $10,753.17 monthly

This is a single classification with five (5) salary levels. Level I is the level at which initial appointments to Attorney - Child Support Services are typically made; and advancement from the lower to the higher level of the class is at the discretion of the appointing authority, provided the minimum qualifications are met.

Incumbents in this class are responsible for all civil legal work, including case and document preparation and court presentation in the establishment and enforcement of family support orders in the name of the State and local Departments of Child Support Services.

The class of Attorney-Child Support Services encompasses five salary levels. These levels are assigned at the department head’s discretion in accordance with budget provisions, workload, organization, and the individual attorney’s expertise and skill, subject to the following basic experience requirements:

Level I – This is the entry and trainee level for attorneys with little or no previous legal experience. Incumbents are generally assigned a variety of less difficult assignments under close supervision.

Level II – This is the first working level. Attorneys at this level generally have at least one year in the practice of law. Incumbents work under close supervision, and perform work of average difficulty.

Level III – This is the full journey level. Assigned attorneys have at least one year of experience in the class of Attorney – Child Support Services, Level II, in Sacramento County Service, or three years of experience in the practice of law. Incumbents at this level are given increasingly difficult and complex assignments under general supervision.

Level IV - This is the advanced journey level. Attorneys at this level have at least one year of experience in the class of Attorney-Child Support Services, Level III, in Sacramento County Service, or four years of experience practicing law, with at least three of the four years in an area of child support law practiced by a local government or state agency. Incumbents are given difficult and complex assignments under minimum direction.

Level V - This is the lead and/or specialist level. Attorneys at this level have at least one year of experience in the class of Attorney-Child Support Services, Level IV, in Sacramento County service. Incumbents litigate demanding and critical cases requiring a highly advanced degree of knowledge of legal processes, or act in a lead capacity when the staff size is so large, or the work is so complex, as to require a first line supervisor and a lead attorney.

 Examples of Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Civil law and procedure especially as it relates to family law and debt collection practice
  • Civil discovery practice
  • Federal and state regulations affecting child support collection and compliance issues
  • Procedures of practice in bankruptcy, workers compensation, and unemployment insurance courts/hearings
  • Legal research resources
Ability to
  • Effectively manage a high volume caseload by prioritizing work into manageable tasks appropriate to the problems presented
  • Effectively review, analyze, research, and develop and present legal issues and arguments orally and in writing
  • Work as a supportive member of a team of attorneys
  • Supervise, motivate, and encourage support staff to assist in the production of an excellent end product
  • Work well with the local family law bench and bar
  • Present a professional, courteous public demeanor

 Employment Standards:

Minimum Qualifications:

Active member in good standing with the California State Bar.
Your California State Bar license number and date of issue MUST be documented on your application.

Special Requirements:

License Requirement: A valid California Driver’s License Class “C”, is required prior to appointment to this class. Failure to maintain a valid license may constitute cause for termination from this class in accordance with Civil Service Rule 11.4. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Criminal History and Background Check: Candidates will need to pass a security clearance investigation conducted by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office or other designated agency.

Probationary Period:

The probationary period for this classification is twelve (12) months.

Testing Process

Minimum Qualifications – To be accepted into the testing process, the information submitted on the application must clearly demonstrate that the applicant meets the required minimum qualifications by the cut-off date. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications by the final filing date will advance to the next testing phase – the Training & Experience Evaluation Exam.

Formula Rate (Training & Experience Evaluation) Exam – The evaluation of the candidate’s relevant experience, education and training, as shown in response to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questions, weighted 100%. Only the responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questions in this job announcement will be evaluated. All candidates successful in the testing process will be notified by mail of their score and ranking and placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the evaluation of the candidate’s responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questionnaire.

Note: Responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questionnaire must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on the cut-off date in order to be evaluated.
