Under supervision, the Collection Equipment Operator operates either a one-person or multi-person manually loaded refuse collection or recycling vehicle. Assignments may include the Neighborhood Cleanup Program, Recycling Program, or other resource recovery or source reduction programs. Employees assigned to multi-person manually loaded refuse collection or recycling vehicles act as leadworker of assigned staff.

 Examples of Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge Of

  • Proper methods of lifting and carrying heavy loads
  • Procedures and policies pertaining to refuse and other source separated recyclable material collection and disposal
  • Heavy duty truck and equipment operations
  • Safety rules and regulations pertaining to refuse and other recyclable material collection and equipment operation
Ability To
  • Operate two and three axle trucks including equipment with dual drive
  • Perform manual labor for extended periods under all types of climatic conditions
  • Speak, read and write English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance
  • Instruct assigned staff of improper work methods
  • Keep route records current
  • Submit basic written reports when required
  • Maintain good relationships with co-workers and the public

 Employment Standards:

Minimum Qualifications:

Either: One year of full-time experience in the class of Sanitation Worker in Sacramento County service.

Or: One year of full-time experience in the operation of a two or three axle vehicle with a GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of 30,000 lbs. or more.

Special Requirements:

License Requirement: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, Class B or higher, is required for positions in this class.

Note: Failure to maintain a valid California Driver’s License, Class B or higher, constitutes cause for termination from the class in accordance with Civil Service Rules.

Note: A copy of your current driver's license and current medical card must be submitted with your application and supplement. Please also submit a copy of your DMV printout, dated within the last 30 days.

Note: California Driver’s License Class B or higher requires regular random drug testing.

Probationary Period: The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.

Testing Process

Minimum Qualifications – To be accepted into the testing process, the information submitted on the application must clearly demonstrate that the applicant meets the required minimum qualifications by the final filing date. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications by the final filing date will advance to the next testing phase – the Training & Experience Evaluation Exam.

Formula Rate (Training & Experience Evaluation) Exam – The evaluation of the candidate’s relevant experience, education and training, as shown in response to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questions, weighted 100%. Only the responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questions in this job announcement will be evaluated. All candidates successful in the testing process will be notified by mail of their score and ranking and placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the evaluation of the candidate’s responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questionnaire.

Note: Responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questionnaire must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on the final filing date in order to be evaluated.
