Salary Information:
Level I: $3,260.75 to $3,962.00 monthly
Level II: $3,960.25 to $4,584.92 monthly

Agricultural and Standards Inspector (Level II) is the journey and advanced training level in this class series. Incumbents continue in training for admission to additional State certifications examinations for Agricultural Inspector/Biologist and Weights and Measures Inspector so that they may qualify for Senior Agricultural and Standards Inspector. Appointees at this level must possess five of the State certificates as indicated in the Minimum Qualifications section. Performance in areas in which incumbents are not certified is permitted under close supervision during rush seasons, emergency situations, or for training purposes.
Agricultural and Standards Inspector (Level I) is the trainee and entry level in this class series. Incumbents work in a learner capacity and receive on-the-job training in both weights and measures in agricultural specialties. Incumbents are required to prepare for qualifying for Agricultural and Standards Inspector (Level II). As experience is gained or during emergency situations, employees are assigned individually to limited programs or special projects where consequences of error are reduced; however, actual operations, methods, and reports continue to receive close review. Performance in areas in which incumbents are not certified is permitted under close supervision during rush seasons, emergency situations, or for training purposes. |

Employment Standards:

Minimum Qualifications:
Level II
Possession of five of the State Agricultural Inspector/Biologist Certificates (listed in question 5 & 6 on the Training and Experience Supplemental Questionnaire), four of which must be from the core certificates.
And: One year of full time paid experience in the enforcement of agricultural or weights and measures laws, or agricultural pest detection or control.
Level I
A Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited four year college with specialization in one or more appropriate disciplines in the agricultural or biological sciences.
Note: Appointees under this alternative must obtain at least one of the State Certificates of Eligibility from the core certificates (listed in question 5 & 6 on the Training and Experience Supplemental Questionnaire) within one year from date of appointment or be removed from employment in this class.
Or
Possession of one or more valid State Agricultural Inspection/Biologist Certificates (listed in question 5 & 6 on the Training and Experience Supplemental Questionnaire).
Note: The word “experience” referenced in the minimum qualifications means full-time paid experience unless the job announcement states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.
Note: If the minimum qualifications include an educational requirement, applicants must submit proof of education with the application. Failure to submit proof of educational requirements may result in disqualification from the examination. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
Note:The level at which initial appointments to the class of Agricultural and Standards Inspector are made. Advancement from the lower to higher level of this class (Level I to level II), are at the discretion of the appointing authority, providing the minimum qualifications are met.
Special Qualifications
Driver’s License: All positions in this class series require possession of a valid State of California Driver License, Class C, or higher at the time of appointment. Some positions may require a Class B California Driver License.
Note: Failure to maintain the appropriate valid California Driver License constitutes cause for a personnel action against the employee in accordance with applicable Civil Service Rules.
Physical Requirements: Incumbents will frequently perform a wide variety of physical tasks such as long periods of standing, walking long distances, stooping, stretching, bending, climbing stairs; lifting weights of fifty pounds, heavy bags, and crates which requires strength, coordination, endurance, and agility. Incumbents must possess normal vision or corrected normal vision and normal color vision.
Work Schedule: Incumbents must be willing to work in all types of weather conditions, travel in an assigned area, and work long and irregular hours including holidays and weekends.
Probationary Period
The probationary period for this classification is twelve (12) months. |

Testing Process
Minimum Qualifications – To be accepted into the testing process, the information submitted on the application must clearly demonstrate that the applicant meets the required minimum qualifications by the cut-off date. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications by the final filing date will advance to the next testing phase – the Training & Experience Evaluation Exam.
Formula Rate (Training & Experience Evaluation) Exam – The evaluation of the candidate’s relevant experience, education and training, as shown in response to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questions, weighted 100%. Only the responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questions in this job announcement will be evaluated. All candidates successful in the testing process will be notified by mail of their score and ranking and placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the evaluation of the candidate’s responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questionnaire.
Note: Responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questionnaire must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on the cut-off date in order to be evaluated.
