Salary Information:
Coroner Technician Level I: $2,942.33 to $3,577.42 monthly
Coroner Technician Level II: $3,088.50 to $3,754.92 monthly

Under supervision, assists forensic pathologists perform autopsy examinations by performing technical procedures as directed by providing tools, equipment, and solutions; preparing bodies before and after the autopsy by disposing of organs, tissues and fluids; using a variety of techniques to prepare medical-legal evidence; identify and release bodies; maintaining facility in a safe sanitary condition; performing a variety of clerical work; and completing other duties related to morgue services.

This is a single classification with two (2) salary levels. Level I is the level at which initial appointments to Coroner Technician are typically made; and advancement from the lower to the higher level of the class is at the discretion of the appointing authority, provided the minimum qualifications are met.

  • Basic human anatomy and physiology as applied to conducting autopsies.
  • Basic medical terminology.
  • Basic radiographic techniques, methods, operations.
  • Maintenance of radiographic equipment.
  • Basic principles of photography, film processing and development.
  • Procedures and practices related to the receipt and release of the dead human body.
  • Chain of evidence techniques.
  • Purpose and objectives of a coroner’s office.
  • Universal safety precautions and aseptic techniques.
  • Techniques involved in handling and preparing bodies for autopsy examination.
  • Methods and procedures for care of surgical instruments and autopsy equipment.
  • Modern office technology and equipment.
  • Customer services principle and techniques.

    Ability to

  • Handle death in a mature and respectful manner.
  • Tolerate unpleasant aspects associated with traumatic death, bodies of deceased persons in various stages of decomposition, odors, and larva.
  • Learn and apply procedures and tests required to assist pathologist in an autopsy exam.
  • Photograph bodies.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Perform routine clerical work and data entry.
  • Work with law enforcement staff on high profile cases.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Work with the public under highly emotional and stressful situations.

  •  Employment Standards:

    Minimum Qualifications

    Either:

    1) Successful completion of 30 semester or 45 quarter units in natural science, Emergency Medical Technology, Paramedicine, or other coursework in a field related to the intent of the class, from an accredited college or university.

    Note: Relevant full time experience may substitute for the required units on the basis of one month of full time experience equals 3 semester or 4 quarter units.

    Note: Completion of the one year internship program with the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office may be substituted for 10 semester or 15 quarter units.

    Or:

    2) One year of full-time experience, paid or volunteer, assisting pathologists in performing autopsies using a variety of techniques to prepare medical-legal evidence.

    Note: Completion of the one year internship program with the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office may be substituted for 4 months of full time work experience.

    Note: If the minimum qualifications include an educational requirement, applicants must submit proof of education with the application. Failure to submit proof of educational requirements may result in disqualification from the examination. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

    Special Requirements

    Criminal History Check
    The County may access criminal history information on candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment for the above class consistent with the provisions of Board of Supervisors Resolution No. 82-602, Personnel Policies and Procedure B-5 and applicable federal and state law. The County shall not consider for employment any candidate who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that relates to or impacts the candidate's ability to perform the job duties of this class unless it is determined that mitigating circumstances exist. For purposes of accessing criminal history information, the candidate will be fingerprinted. A subsequent arrest notification may be obtained.

    License Requirements
    Some positions in this class require possession of a valid State of California Driver License, Class C or higher, at the time of appointment. Failure to maintain appropriate valid California Driver License constitutes cause for personnel action in accordance with Civil Service Rule 11.4 or applicable bargaining agreement. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

    Physical Requirements

  • Ability to frequently lift and move heavy equipment and/or bodies weighing up to 150 pounds and transport them from scene of death or hospital facility.
  • Constant holding, reaching, grasping, writing, and performing repetitive motion.
  • Work in the presence of biological/chemical agents and fumes.
  • Ability to use an air-purifying respirator required by OSHA.

    Working Conditions
  • Collect specimens of human fluids and wastes including blood, urine, and organ tissue from deceased bodies and may encounter specimens containing communicable disease.
  • Work irregular shifts (swing and graveyard), weekends, and holidays.

    Other Requirement
    Medical evaluation to determine ability to use a respirator.

    Probationary Period: The probationary period for this classification is twelve (12) months.

    Testing Process

    Minimum Qualifications – To be accepted into the testing process, the information submitted on the application must clearly demonstrate that the applicant meets the required minimum qualifications by the final filing date. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications by the final filing date will advance to the next testing phase – the Training & Experience Evaluation Exam.

    Formula Rate (Training & Experience Evaluation) Exam – The evaluation of the candidate’s relevant experience, education and training, as shown in response to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questions, weighted 100%. A panel of subject matter experts will only evaluate the responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questions in this job announcement. All candidates successful in the testing process will be notified by mail of their score and ranking and placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the evaluation of the candidate’s responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questionnaire.

    Note: Responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questionnaire must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on the final filing date in order to be evaluated.

    Physical Ability Test - All candidates who are invited to a hiring interview and interested in the job will be required to participate in a physical ability test. Candidates must pass the physical ability test in order to be eligible for hire.

    About the physical ability test: The physical ability test assesses the minimally acceptable levels of performance on tasks Coroner Technicians frequently encounter on the job and are critical to successful job performance. Specifically, the test will assess each candidate’s ability to lift and move heavy equipment and/or bodies weighing up to 150 pounds.

    More detailed information regarding the physical ability test will be provided to all candidates during the interview. All candidates must pass the physical ability test in order to be eligible for hire.
