This is a Permanent Full-Time Position

Incumbents in this class supervise staff in a child development center or play care program and ensure their well being in accordance with State regulations. Incumbents have responsibility for the daily operational program and coordination of curriculum and staff development of multiple child development and play care program sites.

  •  Employment Standards:

    Minimum Qualifications

    Qualifications prescribed by the State of California Department of Education, Commission on Teacher Credentialing, for Program Director or a Children's Center Supervision Permit which authorizes the holder to 1) supervise a child development program consisting of any number of children's facilities, and 2) perform services in the care, development and instruction of children in a child development program;

    AND

    Three (3) years of child care experience, which includes the preparation of reports, the supervision of staff and the day-to-day operation of a childcare facility.

    Documentation Required with Application: Proof that qualifications prescribed by the State of California Department of Education, Commission on Teacher Credentialing (www.ctc.ca.gov) for Program Director have been met and/or a copy of a Children’s Center Supervision Permit authorizing the above MUST be submitted with the application. (The Site Supervisor Permit is NOT equivalent to the Children's Center Supervision Permit.)

    Note: Failure to submit the requested proof above will result in disqualification from the examination.

    Note: Supervisory experience means “having authority to hire, transfer, suspend, layoff, recall, promote or discharge other employees, or to effectively recommend such action…”

    Note: The word “experience” referenced in the minimum qualifications means full-time paid experience unless the job announcement states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.

    Special Requirements

    Background Check: Candidates will be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record. Candidates must be 18 years of age.

    License Requirements: A valid California Driver’s License, Class C is required as staff transports children on field trips. County vehicles are used for field trips. Failure to maintain the appropriate valid California Driver’s License required constitutes cause for termination from the class in accordance with Civil Service rule 11.4. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

    Note: Failure to obtain and/or maintain required license(s) may be cause for disciplinary action in accordance with Civil Service commission rules and applicable bargaining agreement.

    Physical Characteristics (Abilities): With or without the use of aids, sufficient vision to read printed material; sufficient hearing for normal and telephone conversation; ability to speak in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation; sufficient manual dexterity to write, use telephone or business machines; sufficient physical strength and mobility to drive a car, walk and run with students, lift, restrain and control children weighing up to 45 pounds.

    Probationary Period

    The probationary period for this classification is twelve (12) months.

    Testing Process

    Minimum Qualifications – To be accepted into the testing process, the information submitted on the application must clearly demonstrate that the applicant meets the required minimum qualifications by the cut-off date. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications by the final filing date will advance to the next testing phase – the Training & Experience Evaluation Exam.

    Formula Rate (Training & Experience Evaluation) Exam – The evaluation of the candidate’s relevant experience, education and training, as shown in response to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questions, weighted 100%. Only the responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questions in this job announcement will be evaluated. All candidates successful in the testing process will be notified of their score and ranking based on their notification preference and placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the evaluation of the candidate’s responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questionnaire.

    Note: Responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questionnaire must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on the cut-off date in order to be evaluated.
