Positions in this class are responsible for the construction, repair, and maintenance of the underground pipeline system in the unincorporated area of Sacramento County.

 Examples of Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge Of

  • The methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance, construction, and repair of underground pipelines.
  • Basic safety precautions and practices necessary in working with hand tools, light equipment, and vehicles.
Ability To
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Perform hard physical labor.
  • Maintain courteous and effective relationships with coworkers and the public.
  • Read, write, and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance.
  • Learn to use computer equipment and related peripheral equipment to enter and extract information.
  • Work standby and respond to emergency calls.

 Employment Standards:

Either: 1. One year of full-time experience in the class of Maintenance Worker in Sacramento County service performing duties which have included the repair, maintenance, or construction of underground pipeline systems.

Or: 2. Completion of two years in a college civil engineering curriculum.

Or: 3. Completion of two years apprenticeship as a plumber.

Or: 4. One year of full-time experience in the maintenance, construction, and repair and operation of underground pipeline systems.

Note: The word “experience” referenced in the minimum qualifications means full-time paid experience unless the job announcement states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.

Note: If the minimum qualifications include an educational requirement, applicants must submit proof of education with the application. Failure to submit proof of educational requirements may result in disqualification from the examination. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

General Qualifications

Minimum Age Requirement: Candidates must be 18 years of age prior to appointment because of the hazards of the job, as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Driver’s License: A valid California Driver’s License Class “C”, is required prior to appointment to this class. Failure to maintain a valid license may constitute cause for termination from this class in accordance with Civil Service Rule 11.4. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Certificates/licenses Requirements: Some positions require that the incumbents possess a Water Distribution Operator Grade D1 certificate and must complete the appropriate amount of continuing education hours as required by the State of California to maintain the certification. Failure to obtain and maintain the appropriate credentials may constitute a cause for termination from this class in accordance with Civil Service Rule 11.4.

Positions requiring a Water Distribution Grade D1 certificate: Incumbents must possess and maintain a valid Water Distribution Operator Grade D1 certificate issued by the State of California, Department of Health Services within one year after the date of appointment to this class.

Physical Abilities:

  • Climbing up and down ladders and stand on a ladder while performing tasks with both hands.
  • Wear respirators.
  • Lift and carry heavy equipment and tools weighing up to 95 pounds.
  • Load and unload equipment, materials, and pipes weighing up to 95 pounds.
  • Must meet the rating capacity of equipment in order to perform duties of the position.
  • Frequently bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch and reach above the shoulder.

    Note: Individuals who do not meet these physical requirements due to disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

    Working Conditions:
  • Work in enclosed areas where the temperature may exceed 100 degrees F or reach lows below 20 degrees F.
  • Enter, exit, and work in enclosed and confined spaces, such as 24 and 36-inch maintenance access holes.
  • Work in trenches up to 23 feet, or more, in depth.
  • Work on uneven terrain and outside in all types of weather conditions.
  • Work in hip boots during muddy conditions.

    Probationary Period: The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.

    Testing Process

    Minimum Qualifications – To be accepted into the testing process, the information submitted on the application must clearly demonstrate that the applicant meets the required minimum qualifications by the cut-off date. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications by the final filing date will advance to the next testing phase – the Training & Experience Evaluation Exam.

    Formula Rate (Training & Experience Evaluation) Exam – The evaluation of the candidate’s relevant experience, education and training, as shown in response to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questions, weighted 100%. Only the responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questions in this job announcement will be evaluated. All candidates successful in the testing process will be notified by mail of their score and ranking and placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the evaluation of the candidate’s responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questionnaire.

    Note: Responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questionnaire must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on the cut-off date in order to be evaluated.
