|
Under close supervision as a trainee, to learn codes, ordinances, and techniques related to the proper inspection and approval of building plans and water quality permits; and to do other work as required.
This is the entry and first working level in the Building Inspector series. Incumbents are usually assigned to work under the direction and review of an experienced qualified building inspector. Incumbents are expected to develop the proficiency and skill necessary to perform the full range of building inspection and inspections pertaining to environmental enforcement, water quality, air quality, habitat conservation, and grading inspection and/or code violation activities. |

Examples Of Essential Duties:
|
• Assist the public in completing application for building permits; receives building plans for plan check and provides necessary procedures, forms, and information.
• Provides public information over the counter and by telephone concerning the issuance and fee schedule for building and water quality permits.
• Makes field inspections of simple structures under the direct supervision of a qualified building inspector; with experience and proficiency, checks non-technical building plans, collects fees issues permits and performs field inspection work under less close supervision.
• Attends in-service training classes covering all phases of plan check and building inspection work; confers regularly with supervisory staff concerning training needs and progress. |

Recruiting Guidelines:
|
Experience: Two years of experience performing any of the trades or professions directly associated with the structural aspects of building construction or inspection which would have provided the required knowledge's and abilities listed above. Certification in building inspection or a related specialization from a recognized state, national or international code development association is required within one year of hire date.
Education: College level related course work may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience on the basis of 30semester or 45 quarter units equaling one year of experience. |

Other Requirements:

| License/Certificate: Possession of a valid California Driver's License. |
|
Pre-Employment:
|
| All employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of both a pre-employment physical exam, including a drug/alcohol test, and a criminal background investigation, which involves fingerprinting. (A felony or misdemeanor conviction may disqualify the applicant from County employment). |
|
Probationary Period:
|
| As an Approved Local Merit System, the County of Riverside requires all new regular or seasonal employees to serve an initial probationary period, the duration of which is indicated in the applicable Memorandum of Understanding, County Resolution, or Salary Ordinance. Temporary and Per Diem employees serve at the pleasure of the agency/department head. |
