Under general direction, to assist in planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating the work of a major legal division of the District Attorney's Office; and to do other work as required.

Incumbents of this class report to the Assistant District Attorney and assist in the management of the Riverside Area Criminal Division, the Desert Area Criminal Division, or the Family Support Division. Responsibilities are primarily managerial in nature and differs from the Assistant District Attorney by the latter's responsibility to assist the department head in the administration of the District Attorney's Office. By contrast, positions of the next lower classification, Supervising Deputy District Attorney, provide first-line supervision to major sections within a geographic division, or have charge of a County-wide division of moderate size.

This class has been designated At-Will by the Board of Supervisors, in accordance with the provisions provided under Article 6, Section 601E (2), (5) or (6) of the County Management Resolution and serves at the pleasure of the District Attorney.

 Examples Of Essential Duties:
• Plans, organizes, and directs the work of several staffs comprising a major legal division.

• Coordinates the work flow between legal, investigative, enforcement, and clerical functions.

• Coordinates the functions of the division with the courts and other law enforcement agencies and County departments.

• Develops and implements procedures within the division to accomplish goals, objectives, and statutory mandates.

• Recommends to the Assistant District Attorney the establishment and modification of departmental policies.

• Confers with subordinate attorneys regarding cases that are highly complex, of great interest to the public, or which have significant implications as to legal precedent, and may personally direct the prosecution of those cases.

• Approves the initiation, modification, or dismissal of charges in serious cases or cases of great public interest.

• Provides guidance to subordinate supervisors in the training of employees; makes final selections of applicants for employment and recommends hiring to the division head.

• Reviews, investigates, and makes recommendations as to employee grievance claims and other personnel issues.

• Prepares preliminary budget requests.

• Represents the District Attorney at state and national conferences on criminal justice or family support matters, and before civic, professional, and educational organizations.

 Recruiting Guidelines:
Experience: Four years of experience in prosecuting criminal or family support civil actions within the State of California, including one year of experience in lead supervision over professional legal staff.

Knowledge of: The legal principles and ethics; California criminal and civil justice system; California statutory and case law; rules of evidence and the conduct of court proceedings; sentencing laws and practices; principles of management and supervision; duties, powers, limitations, and authority of the District Attorney's Office.

Ability to: Plan, organize, and direct the work of several staffs of attorneys, paraprofessionals, and clerical employees; coordinate enforcement and investigative operations with the litigation of criminal and civil violations of law and family support enforcement actions; analyze and resolve complex legal problems; present legal arguments and statements of fact clearly and logically in written and oral form; establish and maintain working relationships with other County departments and criminal justice agencies.

 Other Requirements:
License/Certificate: Active membership in the State Bar of California.

Possession of a valid California Driver's License is required.

Must be able to pass an extensive background check.

 Pre-Employment:
All employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of both a pre-employment physical exam, including a drug/alcohol test, and a criminal background investigation, which involves fingerprinting. (A felony or misdemeanor conviction may disqualify the applicant from County employment).

 Probationary Period:
As an Approved Local Merit System, the County of Riverside requires all new regular or seasonal employees to serve an initial probationary period, the duration of which is indicated in the applicable Memorandum of Understanding, County Resolution, or Salary Ordinance. Temporary and Per Diem employees serve at the pleasure of the agency/department head.
