The purpose of the class is to manage and administer budgets, construction and design of major projects. The class is responsible for ensuring that work is done properly, following design and budgetary constraints, and in a timely manner. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

 Example of Duties:

 

The Transportation Engineering Division seeks an experienced lead engineer to oversee the City’s Traffic Calming program.  Experience in traffic operations, traffic safety, traffic signal operations and site plan analysis is desirable.

The primary responsibility of the position is to oversee the City’s active traffic calming programs including several technical staff.  This includes administering a traffic calming consultant contract.  Working with citizens and neighborhood groups, and appearing before various City review agencies.  The successful applicant will also be responsible for a variety of other tasks, to include:

  •  Oversees the collection of transportation data related to volumes, speed and pedestrian activities.
  • Develop preliminary concepts related to residential circles, chicanes, splitters, chokers and in some cases speed humps or rumble strips.
  • Provide an overview of detailed designs developed by “in house” staff or consultants.
  • Review and inspect traffic calming features in the construction phase.
  • Process billings from services related to the important “traffic calming program”.  Develop budget and process contracts and invoices.
  • Assist in the writing of grants to obtain safety funds for intersection or corridor improvements.  This year, the Transportation Engineering Division has obtained over $4 million in projects funded by the US Department of Transportation.
  • Assist in responding to citizen’s requests for services in both residential commercial and institutional areas of the City.
  • Assist in processing and approving special permits related to work in streets and alleys, driveway permits and oversize hauling permits.

 Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses:

 

Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related degree and over four years of traffic engineering experience.  A Virginia P.E. is highly desirable.
